Couple F10 questions...

How can you tell by looks if it has a competition package? Similar to F82, trim all black?

What are the differences between a '13 and a '15?

I have seen '13's for $41K with 30K on them and '15's for $59k with the same mileage. Looking for some clarity to what the differences are and also what may be the best year F10 is.

Thanks in advance!

Competition editions have black exhaust trims (different exhaust). Some competition cars have 601M alloys rather than 343M double spoke wheels but the 343M is a forged alloy and the 601M is a light alloy rim. Other changes are not visible - different settings on steering and MDM. In late 2014 BMW addressed a number of issues and the general view is that reliability is much better from then on. Most on here will advise you to go for a later car if you can.

Comp cars sit lower, louder exhaust with black trim and a little quicker

If you can afford it, I would suggest a 14+ for some of the reasons cited above as well as the balance of warranty that may be left on 15’s and 16’s. In regards to the Competition Package I would say it’s not a necessity but nice if your car comes with it; I didn’t opt for the Competition Package as I did not feel it was worth it.

I'm not sure how quantifiable it is, but many say the oil consumption tends to be less on the 2014+. 2014+ has new grille, headlight options (LED), tail lights (subtle), comp package available, and the newer iDrive system.

Agree with above and also the LCI steering wheel which IMO looks much better than pre-LCI.

Also, if you have the VIN you can use these free online BMW VIN decoders that will tell you what packages and options came on the car.

As others mentioned, visually the only way to tell is by the darker exhaust tips. The 601M wheels are a competition edition only option, though competition cars can still be fitted with 343s from factory. You should always decode the VIN and look for 7MA option code just to be sure.

2015+ cars got newer idrive systems (touch). 2016+ cars got 600 HP for competition package (vs 575 for 2014-15 Comp Package car.)

I can tell you in my experience coming from a '13 to a '14; the car is night and day. the 14 feels more refined...doesn't roll as much into turns. the only thing I miss on the 13 is the turbo spool. even on a stock car you could hear them spool up in the engine bay. the 14 is much more quiet as stock. I did remove that cats and that changed it a lot but stock for stock - the 13 and 14 are night and day.

My first F10 M5 was a 13’ and it had a variety issues and spent quite a bit of time at the dealer; I currently have a 15’ F10 M5 and it has not had one issue. Both cars were acquired new. Many people w/13’s have had no issues but I also know quite a few that had issues with the 13’s.
