Be glad your car's stock if not you would be dealing with a very different nightmare. Seems like you've had quite a bit of bad luck with this car, Did you ever try to have it lemon lawed?

This guy seized his motor up as well due to rod bearings. Granted it was at 48k miles but still. Something you may want to read into.

I hope they don't try to say that grinding was you trying to accidentally force it into 1st rather than 3rd. I guess when they pull the DME data that will tell the tale so they can't wrongfully accuse you. That happened to my friend back in the day with his Trans Am, but at least a GM motor was a lot cheaper. At least you have another nice car while they get this one back up and running. |

Welcome to the group of M5 engine replacements. I picked my 2014 M5 CP with 29k back in Sept. I picked up the car in Richmond VA from a BMW dealership, drove it home to Chicago and in less than 24 hours the engine locked up cruising @ 90mph. Every error possible came up. Ended up being a couple stuck injectors which caused the cylinder to fill up with fuel and on the up stroke the rod broke. When they replaced the engine they only replaced the faulty injectors and left the others. I still don't believe it was stuck injectors, but that's all they could give me. The engine seized on a Saturday, it was inspected on a Monday and it was back in my hands two Friday's later (2 weeks). Make sure they cover a 1200 mile oil change on the new engine once you get it back. Please note, I had no mods.

This happened to me too, was a 2012 with 100k miles on the clock. Was last September
Lost power steering going 60Mph, engine seized I had only had it a few days so legally the dealer had to take it back. There was a lengthy legal process though, including independent investigation, their conclusion was the car (with full BMW service history) had been run on low oil at some stage in its life.. apparently the oil pump was ok Was rod failure and everything got so hot everything seized including the crank |

Sounds like oil pumps and rod bearings are the common theme. Looks like I will get new coated bearings and make sure it has the updated pump before modifying.

Alright guys, here's the good news!
BMW agreed to replace the engine for free under warranty. $50k engine replacement my service advisor told me. Yes, it was driven hard. Yes, it was previously tuned. I was rolling 130mph headed to ATL from MIA with this Focus ST and I thought for sure there was a 10% chance BMW NA would come back and say "the logs look like you were driving the car like a madman directly before it died". On top of that, I am curious how the transmission will fare with the new engine due to how badly I grinded third directly before she seized. The even better part is (I didn't want to say this until everything was finalized) but, I had a JB4 + BCM on it probably 2 months ago. I took it off because although it was VERY cool and 1,000% worth the money, my car died in the middle of three lanes of traffic and I had to push that b*tch in 90 degree heat because of it. It was just misfires and stuff and the problem went away a few hours later without me having to do anything other than spam "clear CELs" and turn it on and off a bunch of times. It was my fault because apparently I "didn't close the case correctly" on the JB4 (I'm a software engineer, you would think I know how to tighten 4 screws :P) but Terry and gang were great. He gave me a full refund which I give him mad props for. Verdict + tl;dr: I drive the F*CK out of my car. Hard. Not because I'm a good driver or I'm so cool or I'm a track guy or I know what I'm doing. This is the first car I learned stick on. Blew the clutch, blew the driveshaft. Service history a mile long (gas pump failed, A/C blower went out, B&O speakers blown, ignition coils went bad). BMW has been nothing but good to me. I was never a BMW fan (I ran into some money and said f*ck it, why not get an M5) and it was the best thing I ever did. My rotors started to crack, boom, all 4 new rotors and pads. I've never paid a dollar for anything service related. Free oil changes, free fluids, free everything. I just buy tires... often. :P M5 of Theseus. I'm mad I got an M6 already. I should have kept this baby after lease (6MT, red guts, B&O, she's a bad b*tch). I was away too afraid to have it outside of warranty... but, with an entirely new engine, I don't know... Nah, thinking about it, I still wouldn't want this car out of warranty, or without knowing DAMN well an extended warranty is going to cover like, 95% of shit that goes wrong. Electronics included. |

They did not and I really don't think the piggy from two months ago was an influence in my car randomly dying when doing 90mph |

We all appreciate your honesty but I wouldn't be admitting things like that on a public forum after BMW agreed to warranty your engine. Unless you're ready to foot the bill yourself. Doesn't BMW regularly scan these forums for things like this? Just a helpful reminder

1. Engine was locked up (do we think it was because of the JB4 being on it prior or was I just given a lemon, so to speak?) 2. They replaced the block. They drove it around. Looked like it locked on the diff and they heard whine/something grinded + broke... so... they replaced the diff. 3. After the diff, they drove it around again to test it. They heard a whine in the transmission and decided it locked on that too. Replaced the whole transmission + clutch + flywheel. How do you guys see a used (driven hard, not track hard, but... silly/stupid hard) MT M5 with a brand new block + diff + transmission? Is it a positive thing since all of the parts are new, or a negative thing since it isn't the original "factory" build (and it's obvious the car has/had problems)? It took the dealer 5 trips back to find a boost leak. A Honda Civic beat me in traffic while I was flooring it in 1st gear (no wheel spin) and the mechanic got in the car, rode with me, and said... "this is normal. Everything is fine." It went to auction and I found it on eBay. I think it went for like somewhere between $47k-$52k on eBay and mentioned nothing of a replaced engine. I think that's kind of shady. I tried to get BMW financial to cover one of the payments while my $1,200/mo car sat in a shop broken for 2 months, but I got some young punk dickhead of a sales rep who couldn't give less of a fuck and was the fakest motherfucker time waster I ever met. They tried to get me to pay the $800 tow bill to get it towed back (I was on a road trip when it did) but I disputed the payment and won because the phone rep said I would be able to reimburse it, but they didn't honor it when I tried to follow their reimbursement process. All in all, for the length of the 13 month lease, I got: a new shortblock a new transmission two new clutches a new flywheel all four new rotors (I drove so hard they started to crack) a new rear diff a new driveshaft (I snapped mine doing a 6k launch not knowing any better) Not bad... for... $0... |
