Every dealer might be different, but when I asked my service manager at the dealership he said they don't open the DCT. Clutch replacement they will do.
I was told the same thing. I asked about fluid and filter maintenance and they said they don't open it, it's lifetime fluid. Lol
If there was something that needs repair minus the clutch they replace the whole unit.

Whatever happened to the good old days when mechanics actually fixed issues with cars. Today's mechanics only know how to replace the problem instead of actually fixing it.....

^^^ its abit bit different diagnosing a set of point, condessor or carb issue on old vehicles to dealing with multiple linked systems and code. Dealers are not paid or charge for diagnosis so most diagnostic and repair routines are writen around module/unit replacement - these are then requested back by the manufacuture whoe will try and assertain route cause and either modify the part and or the diagnostic and repair procedure.

There are still some clever techs out there who like to use their brians outside of the presrided protocols.

You also have to think about what dealerships are really supposed to be working on. They are only supposed to be working on 100% stock cars with 100% stock components. If you bought an M5 and kept it 100% stock for 100,000 miles then yes the stock DCT will probably be fine without a fluid change or any other maintenance during that time, but if you were to have a really high mileage car say around the 150k to 200k mileage range then yes the DCT gears would probably be done and the dealership would recommend replacing the entire transmission with a brand new one in order to reset the longevity of the entire unit rather than just replace discs, etc... where other components on the tranny are worn out. Also that was a really long run on sentence.

Seriously though, anything aftermarket for improvements to stock components I wouldn't want the dealerships messing with that stuff anyways, unless its Dinan where they make their parts super easy to install and most of the time better than stock components.

Here is my opinion on the dealer doing the SSP upgrade... don't.

At the most I'd have the dealer do the removal/install, build a crate and ship it to Kris.

You cannot put a price on peace of mind, however, you can put a price on replacing a slagged transmission.

Agree. Few hundred to pull, few hundred to ship. Or if SSP has recommended shops they've worked with before go there.

It's actually really simple to do the clutch swap if you can read and follow directions. Not bad at all.

I have to replace the mechatronics unit as well so waiting on that. Just swapping the clutch can be done in a day

Where are you able to buy the mechatronic unit? I didn't think they were available separately. You are able to buy a new, unused unit?

You can but it's very expensive - I am taking one from a low mileage DCT unit

Is SSP upgrading any internals parts or are they just cleaning it out and updating?

I guess I did not provide enough info as to whether BMW tech's could do this work. What I meant to say is would they be able to do this job on the side if you could find a tech that would do this for a price.

I don't know the answer to that but from what I've read it seems as though the techs do not have the training to do a rebuild, other than remove, replace, clutches, etc.
If I was rebuilding mine I would go with an aftermarket vendor like SSP or Shep who have a lot of experience with DCT's.

Thanks for the info guys. I will run this by my techs and there is even a slight hesitation for an answer then I will know not to do it locally. Besides, without expertise and repetition, a person would still be taking a chance. Not the kind of chance I want to take.
