Keep asking for More Oil

Hello All F10M5 Owners

Does your M keep asking for more oil added every 1k miles? Mine does is this normal. I talk to my service advisor and he said that BMW said it is normal to add oil every 800 miles to the car

if you are driving in city only with stop and go traffic most of the time than yes

if you have same consumption on highway, then doesnt sound normal to me

research the forum
it has been discussed millions of times and has at least 5-6 threads

mine needs 1 litre for every 700 miles (majority of time) ... consistently for 2 years now.

lowest consumption of oil - 1 litre @ 1,000 miles
highest " " - 1 litre @ 500 miles

Mine devours a liter per 3 thousand miles so it seems that I will have to add mid way before service

My car is at 16k miles and I have yet to add oil. I strongly believe break in plays a big role in oil consumption.

I think your car has a "problem", rings were not seated from new.
My LCI has covered 10K miles NO Oil used at all.
I did the 40 miles or so hard brake-in once Oil was hot, never used a drop of Oil.

How true is it that break plays a role in this... I too am in the same boat with adding oil every 1000 so far...and unfortunately i am in the dark on how the car was broken in since someone out 12k miles before me

I think with this engine it does matter a lot.
Seat those rings early or they never seal properly.
Thats why your Oil is being burned.

I use a liter of oil, every 800 to 1500km normally. But then at 8800km I added another and drove long stretches (300+ km per leg) of just highways and mountain highways, I'm now at 11100km and it almost hasn't used a drop. And I pushed her very hard up some mountain roads doing speeds almost no car should be able to do going up hill !!

So that leads me to believe that our cars dislike city stop and go traffic but love highways, or that it hates bursts of acceleration compared to hard and prolonged acceleration.

All cars seem slightly different. Some require more than others.. Other than that, yes it is pretty normal.

5K miles no additional oil required. Break in was completed almost 100% non-highway driving. After car was properly warmed up did not usually pay attention to rpms.

If needed what is the required oil that needs to be used?

It is like a human lab value has a reference range so probabky normal can be from zero burn up to 1L per 800 mils as per BMW -

John, but are you doing stop and go city driving or long motorway journeys ?

Think that plays a part in oil consumption also
