Winterizing the M5
Hey guys!!! I am fully in over react and worry about everything mode lately and was looking for advice. My wife's M5 has to be stored in our garage in the winter and with as much snow as we've had - its not going to be driven. After asking the deanship (who I actually love and and they are usually awesome) who provided me with "google it" response about how to winterize my car- here is what I have done to prep the M5 so far:
1- started with a good wash and winter wax (done by a professional) 2- raised the tire pressure once in its resting place to 45psi 3- added fuel stabilizer 4- connected the bmw battery tender/charger My biggest question is do I keep the battery tender (once the battery is fully charged) continually hooked up or once its charged do I take it off and then reconnect a few weeks later. My second biggest question is - if I keep it hooked up all the time- is it ok to keep the hood up for weeks at a time Lastly- anything different I should do or is there anything else you guys would recommend. As always- I appreciate your help and input!!

I've done the same. You can leave the charger on all winter. Not sure why your hood is open though.

I drive my m3 year round but I only work 4 miles from home with a relatively flat drive to and from work. the wife on the other hand works in a area thats really hilly and you guys really have no idea how snowy syracuse is. Would love to drive the m5 year round but she literally cannot as her call schedule means she drives all hours of the night and day and a lot of those times driving is dangerous because the roads are not always plowed (plus she has an x1 as a winter car)

Is it recommended to start the engine at all if winterising?
I may decide to ground mine, not only due to poor traction/slippery conditions & risk from other drivers, but due to grit & road salt. |

As others have said. Get proper winter tires and drive it. These cars are awesome in the cold weather provided you have the right tires. Seems like such a waste to put it to sleep for a few months. Havent we all seen the hours and hours of engineering that has gone into these cars specifically for cold weather?

Just stick with the owners manual pressures for the load and speed you intend to go. However if you are in colder temps (-20 to -35C) I wouldn't go over inflating the tires if you are after grip. That said every 5C you'll find the need to adjust air pressure.
