Oil Measurement - Min to Max
Hi All
Whats the oil quality needed to take it from Min to Max? My M5 is half way and I cautiously added 250ml and no change.....Probably not enough. I don't want to add a litre only to find its over filled..... |

Mine was about 70% "full" according to the oil measurer level. I added 250ml - it didnt move, so added another 250ml - it then was at full....
Have done around 400 miles and it is now 80% of max.... |

I now own a 15' M5 but also had a 13' M5 and it consumed a ton of oil; to the point I would just keep oil in the trunk to add whenever necessary.
My current 15' has not had this issue at all so I think more than likely this was an issue with the Pre-LCI M5's. Took that 13' to dealer multiple times and that issue persisted until the day the lease expired. Not really a big deal just consumes quite a bit of oil.

If you think the sensor isn’t working replace it at next oil change (or right away). It isn’t difficult, easy diy, part < $200 on internet, or any shop can do it, no special bmw knowledge necessary.
I did since my level didn’t change in months. Glad I did because now I can see the actual amount I’m losing every month. |

Perhaps BMW has different specifications for different countries? My USA 2013 M5 owner's manual tells me that when the 'Engine oil level' warning is shown I'm to add one quart of oil. Right after that it tells me to take care not to add too much engine oil as that can lead to engine damage.
One quart has always brought me to max level when the warning light has come on. |

BMW uses the same sensor on different cars. The amount measured probably isn't too precise and varies from sensor to sensor, plus the shape of the oil pan differs between car models. Think of it as just an approximation and not careful measurement.
