BMW states no difference in fuel consumption between non-CP & CP. If anything I would expect a v. slightly lower fuel consumption in CP (if any difference at all) if driven to a set speed as the improved body control should allow speed to be maintained more of the time. Obviously the improved body control could also encourage less fuel efficient driving (not necessarily aggressive driving - doesn't take much to impact fuel consumption).

Best I've done in the CP with MPE (MPE reduces the fuel consumption slightly in comparison to CP sports exhaust) when driven as you say in 'Grandma' mode is 37.5mpg (UK), which I believe is about 31.2mpg (US), but this is running on BP ultimate 97 RON (no ethanol), if I use Shell V-Power Nitro+ (which I believe is 99 RON, but has 10% ethanol), max I can get is ~36mpg (UK) / ~30mpg (US). It all depends on how much I can resist the temptation to accelerate hard, however, fuel quality will be a factor.

I don't believe you will receive the response you want if you raise your concerns with the service dept. You are likely to be told that your fuel consumption is 'within expected tolerances' (what you are stating doesn't sound uncommon for an M5). Same applies to the widely varying oil consumption.

As an example we own a petrol turbo 7sp auto MB from which I can extract 56mpg (UK) on a long run, whereas other drivers in our household struggle to get over 47mpg (UK) - this is even when they are following me driving another car (so same departure & arrival time with same average speed). What I have observed is that they tend to fail to keep a constant speed (I can see the gap reducing & increasing behind me, even on level roads) and have a tendency to be more abrupt with the throttle pedal (I'm not talking about flooring it, just not being sensitive with the throttle pedal). The point of this example is not to suggest anything about your driving style, just that it is going to be almost impossible to prove anything as a fault.

Putting driving conditions aside, there are also the obvious consumers; lights, radio, aircon, heated seats/wheel, massager, etc. All variables in the fuel consumption equation.

Also, it took my car at least 1K miles to adjust to the MPE exhaust, so you may need to give it longer after having removed the wires from the exhaust valves.

I have covered 8600 miles in mine since new in September 2013.
My average over that period is 25.1 MPG.
Mostly out of town driving cruising speed 85/90 MPH went I can.
Booting when roads allow.

So unless your exclusively driving in town, IMO your car needs a check up.
It could be an injector or something of the like.
My Car got the "Hard Brake -in" but not over 5.5K RPM for the first 40/60 miles.
It uses NO Oil at all.
PS) I don't drive slow.

If I drive in grandma mode, D1 on 7th gear and efficient power and everything in comfort and do 65-70 mph, I get 19.5 mpg. I actually drove for 10 miles today and I reset the mpg counter as I was doing 65 and after 10 miles, the counter showed 19.5.

I use BP 93 octane exclusively, it's the same gas station I used for my M3 for many years.

Comparatively, I was getting 14-15 mpg in city and 23-24 mpg in highway in my M3.

What a let down. So much for "efficient dynamics".
M3 = less displacement + less power == better fuel consumption.

For the power this car makes it gets decent mileage. ( my opinion of course) . I have other cars that get 9-11.

On my trip to Canada and New Orleans, I averaged 22-23 mpg. And this is doing mostly 80-85 on the highway, and with trunk full of stuff.

I made a short trip in my old M3 (110 miles) and I was seeing 18-19 mpg.

Yep thats about right MPG
Here in the UK that would = 23 * 1.2=27.6 MPg
This at a constant speed is good.

I think with my Tune and Full Straightpipes, I may be getting better gas mileage. I also drive a lot in Sport and Sport+ throttle setting which helps me to not give the throttle as much input. Sport and Sport+ have no effect on fuel economy either. I tested all the modes of the throttle setting button on my way home from New York City the other week.

I was averaging about 25-26mpg at about 75-80mph on the highway.

I usually cruise on the highway in 6th gear too. I'll only go into 7th gear if I am over 80mph. It's for drone reasons. With no resonators in my straightpipe setup, I like to avoid the drone range when cruising which means keeping the RPM's above 2,000rpm. There is very little difference in fuel economy between 6th and 7th gears too. You gain maybe 0.5mpg between the two when cruising. I've tested it.

2014 M5 with CP. 3k miles.

50/50 Highway/City ~17.2 mpg

70/30 ~15.5mpg

Tracking at Laguna this Thursday and expect <10MPG.

I get higher MPG calculations using mileage and actual fuel fill -v- trip computer.

30k+ miles....

Spirited driving nets me around 16 mpg for my commute to/from work which is a 26 mile mix of busy interstate (60%) and stop and go traffic light hell (30%). Limo driving nets me 18-19mpg.

Long hauls to/from Nashville or Atlanta via interstate with very little excitement nets me closer to 23mpg.

Don't forget that Sport+ (even when not driving in a spirited manner) impacts gas mileage. Sport is a good compromise.

Also, if you flap your own paddles you can do a bit better.

I know what I'm about to say will generate a lot of angst, but here goes. Does anyone know what the MPG is on a Rolls Royce? No? I didn't think so because people who buy them don't care. What matters more to me is that I can fill up my M5 and go on a highway trip with everything set to default (comfort) and the range is well over 400 miles. I hate having to stop for gas every few hours. What is the actual MPG I don't know and I don't care. I realize this is easy for me to say because I don't drive my M5 every day- it is a fun, weekend car for me. My daily driver is a X5 35d, which probably averages 22-30 MPG. Furthermore, when I fill up the X5 on a long trip, the distance to empty resets to over 600 miles to empty. This puts a huge smile on my face. So, if mileage is important, I highly recommend one of the BMW models with the diesel engine. Save the M5 for fun.

I agree with you too bud. Fortunately for me and people like me my commute is only 7 miles to work each way. But I still use my Fiat daily driver which gets 28mpg in the city and 37mpg on the highway to get to work everyday. For long distance trips, I do like the M5 a lot because it's extremely comfortable, I get to listen to the Bang & Olufsen, and it doesn't get bad gas mileage either. For a family hauler the X5 diesel can't be beat though.

I get 28-32 mpg on the highway. Strange how different the same model car can be.

On my 2010 Phantom I average about 12. I had a Ghost that got about 15 mpg.

I've been getting low 20s in mixed driving, mostly 80% highway. I dip into the 15s in city driving, but I've never seen below 14 unless I was really hammering it!

with CEL on
straight-pipes
catless dp's around city my consumption is 24L/100km

with same set-up on highway in 6th/7th gear just above 2k RPM i can see 10-11L/100km, sometimes even 9L/100km !

and i had exact same consumption on high-way, having car bone stock (according to computer, but it feels like i had better consumption with no CEL) and city consumption increased by 2-3L/100km, as i downshift to hear cracks and bangs every other traffic light! cant help myself

i had exact same consumption on high-way and city in m3

Either some of you guys are really old and don't know how to drive these cars, or I have a problem with my engine. We are talking about 30-35% difference in mileage, that is a problem in my book.
