Lease up in 6 months.....550i (Dinan Stage 3 to M5?)

Okay, so my lease on my 2011 550i (Stage 3 Dinan) will be up in 6 months. The dealers has told me to expect the factory to approach me maybe a month or two prior to possibly exit the least early and get into another BMW.

If this is the case and I were to jump from my current car into the M5, am I going to feel like I made an (almost) even swap or will the M5 feel like a much better car?

Obviously, my current car makes a ton of horsepower and ridiculous torque.

Will the total M5 package feel like a major upgrade to me? Most of my driving is highway driving, although I live in the country and take serious advantage of the winding country roads.

Also.....I'd be looking at an M5 with the competition package (just to add to the discussion).

Thank you!

In a word yes. I'm not trying to be a smartass, but your current car is a very fast BMW. The M5 is an ///M car and in stock form will feel faster than your current car. You may not be aware of some of the modifications available to M5's these days, but with a couple of simple mods, your M5 will easily be making over 700hp. I've never seen a Dinan Stage 24 do the 1/4 mile in 11.3 like one member was able to get with his M5. Just go test drive one and then report back.

This is exactly what i want to hear. I just don't want to pay for it, only to find that it feels just like my old car. While I didn't expect that to be the case, I just needed to know for sure. I am ask considering the M6 (regular coupe), but have 3 kids and the bench seat in the back of the M5 would be more convenient (how is that for an extremely boring requirement of an M car).

I would also do myself a favor and do a test drive of an M5 before committing to anything.

I'm in the same situation. We have a 2012 550xi coming off lease this year. I was able to test drive a used 2013 M5 at a dealer. Although we very much like our 550xi, the M5 was very different. The 550xi is quiet, fast and almost detached. There is much more engagement with the M5.

Of course, much of the two cars is similar. The general layout, the look over the hood and electronics (except for the M specific options). On the other hand, you could easily tell the apart if you were blindfolded.

I have a E92 M3 and we had a 335i before we got the 550xi. The differences were similar. As RPiM5 stated, the M cars are different than the other versions of the same line in many ways. Although many tend to focus on the HP, it's the entire package of steering, suspension, engine and looks that make a M car different. As you can probably tell, an M5 is in my future.

I agree with the others - a test drive will be helpful to you. There are a fair number of used 2013s around so getting a test drive shouldn't be difficult. Just remember that the steering has been recalibrated a bit in the late 2013 and now 2014s.

test drive one and find out for yourself? Pretty sure dealers won't stupid to not entertain a current 550i owner. I know one gentleman chose 650i cg after testing the M5, he said the M5 was too much of a car to handle at his age (74). Most likely you won't be disappointed in the M5 though.

Go drive an M5... it's day and night different from a 550 in terms of dynamics. Brakes, handling ability, steering feel, feedback, transmission, the list goes on. In terms of raw power, an M5 is faster than a Dinan S3 and most notably, power in the upper rev range where the 550 falls flat relatively speaking. Plus, the seats and nappa leather are much nicer.

We'll worth the price difference, if you're a car guy, enjoy the overall driving experience improvement, and most importantly, have the disposable income.

I don't think the M5 will feel faster than the Dinan, but it will be faster, and it will corner much faster. The biggest difference you will notice is a lot more grip and much better brakes. Those were the things I always wanted when I had my Dinan 550i.

i think people get to wrapped up into power of a car to really understand what makes other cars "better" in some cases.

your Dinan 5 series may be fast, but the M is fast, better looking, better handling, better brakes the list goes on. just because a modded GTR can beat just about every exotic on the road doest make it a better car. i mean you cant beat the sound of a V12 Ferrari.

A Test Drive is the only answer.
It will depend on the type of driving you do also, you may just not notice the changes in many scenarios.

I'm in the same shoes as you are. I have 3 months left on the M3. I'm in a quandary. I love the new M5 (although I haven't driven it yet), but I like the compactness of the M3. I don't have kids yet, but thinking of the future.

and I'm in your shoes... I have the M3 and love it, and have 3 months left on my 3-year lease. I love the look, feel and everything about the M3 really. but I do have kids. 3 of them. as a replacement, I prefer the look of the M6, but prefer the driving and comfort of the M5. so i've just ordered a new M5. I was lent one for the weekend by my friendly dealer and that convinced me the M5 is a great step up from the M3 and is a great 'sensible' family saloon and a gentleman's supercar at the same time... I will be driving it on my own for +80% of the time, but when we all want to go out in it, there's plenty of room and toys for everyone to have fun

You can always upgrade later and the annual depreciation will be less on the M3.

If you like compactness, buy the F80. You won't be happy with the M5.

There is a pull ahead program now for the 2011 F10 5 series; they will eat 3 payments. Order your car like I did and you will time it perfectly.
