BMW M Power App: Exclusive First Preview Demo

We just attended the US media launch for the 2014 M6 Gran Coupe at the beautiful Circuit of the Americas Formula 1 Track in Austin, Texas. Testing the M6 Gran Coupe was the highlight of the event, but we were also given a first look and demo of the exciting upcoming BMW M Power App (which we share with you in the video below).

Note: this app is *NOT* yet available in the iOS app store. It is *NOT* the same as the M Power Meter app currently available in the iOS store. Once this app becomes available for download from the app store (this Summer), we'll make an announcement.

In short, the M Power App records data from the various automotive sensors in the car and uses that information to record track sessions and provide:

• lap times
• real-time review of the lap (with comparison modes)
• important technical data
  • throttle input
  • steering input
  • braking force
  • G-force
  • RPM
  • fuel efficiency

Two of my favorite features of the app include the head-to-head ghost comparison mode and the custom track generator feature.

The app can generate custom tracks on the fly, so you aren't limited to only using the app for its preprogrammed tracks. This feature will be useful for autocross, custom tracks or regular trips to your grocery store.

The head-to-head ghost comparison mode lets you compare two separate laps and view both runs on the track map in real time. It's a great way to see where one lap gained or lost time to the other. The two laps chosen for comparison can both be the user's own laps, or compared against a lap sent to the user by anyone else (friend, track instructor, etc.)

The app was demoed to us by two fellas from the BMW Technology Office - Phil Johnston, Product Manager for the BMW Group Apps Platform and Paul Doersch, the US Product Manager and Technical Lead for the M Power App.

Yea, it's really very slick. I was very impressed with it in person. Remember, this works for any BMW (not only M models) as long as it has BMW Apps option.

Coolness! So wait they can do all of this and still not give us adjustable Side Bolsters in the F10 M5, even on the 2014 LCI M5?! Where's M54ccibo to chime in?! HAHAHA!

That is a great app!! However, it has totally taken away the BS factor from lap times...... And now those favorite roads that used to be just a way to get from here to there, they can be timed laps and compared to previous bests! This could be dangerously fun! And a G meter as well....... corner speeds are going up.

I know it's only been a month Jason, but do you get any info on the development of this app and its progress toward release? Thought I'd comment on your post again as I'm surprised it didn't get more attention when you first released it. Seems like almost everyone could get some fun from using it, just around town or at the track.

I don't get updates on its progress towards release, but I was told that it will be here this summer, so should be within the next couple of months.

The app had lots of attention actually - on the main thread that was featured on the homepage (on M3POST - http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=848859).

And agreed, this should prove to be a fun app for all.

Right here sir. Yes, WTF?!?!?!?!?!? LOL!!!

Seriously though, regarding the app; throttle, G-forces, etc. without an OBDII interface that is cool...will be interesting to see how this competes with Harry's lap timer. If you can take the data and overlay on a GoPro video, that will be even better.

Ahh, I don't browse around much to other boards, but it makes sense that the M3 board would be much more excited about that app than the majority of the M5 board.

BMW needs to go into the app store and start cleaning out all the miscellaneous apps that do nothing for you. Then introduce one very effective app that has many features and tabs.

I was excited when you announced this app, but it's now past summer and I haven't seen any new word on its release. Is BMW still planning on releasing it? Update please!!

As of 445pm today it stopped being summer and started being fall.

I thought this app was supposed to be released in the summer. Anyone know what happened?

That was the original timing when it was previewed to us at the M6 Gran Coupe launch at COTA. Looks like the release date has been pushed, but I don't know until when.
