A pair of Competition Package First Drive reviews

Both say pricey but worth it... and the HP increase is not the key benefit. This is inline with my subjective opinion on the CP as well -- steering, stiffening, lowering, and a better stock exhaust note. Is all this worth the $6K? for me it was.

Yeah. These things get better every year. Let's see what CP V.2.0 looks like...

I want 50 more hp, torque vectoring AWD, 4WS.

By the time BMW has this, I'll probably be driving the Porsche Pajun Turbo S or the 2015 CLS63.

I guess my patience paid off! ZCP M3 - ZCP (is it still called ZCP with the M5?) here I come!

I'll just say this. If the 2013 M5 had the Comp Package and CCB's available, I would have ordered them. I think they are worth it. However, I think the M5 without them is still an outstanding car. Also on the issue of steering alone, I really don't get it. I've got 23K miles on my M5 now with 3,000 of then being in the past 7 days and I like the steering just fine. I'm sure the updated steering just makes the car that much better.

Car & Driver was never fond of this generation M5/M6, and it looks like they barely liked the CP this time around

I think it's because you're not pushing the car hard enough (around corners etc). For example, when I drove my first rear wheeled drive car (non beemer), I honestly could not tell the difference.

So, the issue here is obviously the M5 should have been like (w/comp pack) that in the first place. Some say shame on BMW, some say good marketing!

Dude you must not know who I am. I push the M5 harder around corners than any other member on this forum probably. Lol! 2 days ago I drove a 45mile twisty forest road through half of the state of Oregon. Lol! I'm sure the new steering changes are great, but I'm saying it doesn't need it. But hey what do I know.

Yes you're absolutely correct! My mistake! I always think of M5 drivers as sedate law-abiding citizens! Not like those damn M3 drivers!

Indeed there are just laws, like against murdering people. And then there are unjust laws like 30mph curves on empty mountain roads.

Wow, I picked mine up on the same day as RPiM5 (hard to believe it's already been a year) and I don't even have 5000 yet!

Back on topic though - I think we need to have a back to back ZCP and non-ZCP review, same day/same conditions, from a race driver (like Probst for example) to really know the answer here.

These reviews reinforce my main gripe about the car and it's the absurdly heavy steering and the lack of feel. It is precise and the car can be placed nicely but the steering feel is so artificial and the effort so high that Comfort mode has to be used all the time for the steering. Since it's still a hydraulic system and not electric I can't understand how BMW would release the car with steering that feels so artificial.

I've found recently that I've preferred Mercedes steering over BMW. Is this because Mercedes has electric steering and BMW has hydraulic?

Yes. I'm also a fan of electric steering. That said I am very happy with the M5's steering.

And you be getting that famous Porsche service. Just ask the guys who lost 911 engines (due to a Porsche build error) and Porsche told them to drop dead. It took a class action suite to get Porsche to do the right thing.
