Always loved. Never forgotten.

After driving the F80 M3 today it made me think about ///M Divisions past. Never have been a fan of the M3 until this new F8x generation, and considered getting it one day, but have decided not any time soon for me after today's test drive. It's a fantastic car for sure though. As great as it was to drive the newest of ///M's offering today, it made me think of times past, when the grass was greener, life seemed simpler, and ///M cars seemed more pure.

Always loved. Never forgotten.

I think I'll be back one day.

E39s and E60s are timeless, despite their quirks. As tangibly better as our F10 Ms are, don't think it will make as much of an emotional impact as those cars did. Maybe that is an unfair assessment considering the F10 generation is far from over. But E39 is still my favorite M5!!! And I will never forget the day I heard a decatted E39 M5 on a cold start. I thought it spawned the devil!

It took me a while to realize, but E60 M5 is my favorite car to date.

I would trade my F10 today for my frozen grey E60 if it's still in the same shape I left it. Someone is running around with it having a great time.

You never know what you've got until it's gone. There's every likelihood that you'd miss the F10 just as much if not more were you to switch back to E60.

DCT is what I would miss. SMG is ancient now. 6MT would be best, but they are hard to find.

OK so let me ask you guys this? I have a E60, alpine white and my beater is a 02 e46 manual wagon.

If I get a 14' M5, I will more than likely sell the e60.
If I get the F80 M3, than I could keep the e60.

What would you guys do?

Keep the e60, and personally I'd choose a more dedicated 2 seater sports car as your alternate. F80 M3 would be great if you must have 4 seats

For ///M, they at least are. If I could afford a new Lamborghini Huracan LP610, my desire for S85 engines of times past would fade in the distance very fast.

Yeah, never in a million years could I trade down from an F10 to an E60 M5. The F10 is too good, it just lacks the character of a Naturally Aspirated engine. In a way it's kind of a good thing though, as it gives enthusiasts their choice of character. I do sometimes wish that BMW M would go the Porsche marketing strategy route and offer a Turbo version of each generation M5 and a high revving naturally aspirated version.

SMG is fun, but way too slow now that I've been spoiled by DCT. I would curse the SMG for being so damn slow but love it for making the fillings rattle out of my teeth again. 6MT seems like a good compromise theoretically, after having experienced the DCT in the F10 for so long now. At least with 6MT there's no RCOD to worry about too.

That's what we in the business call, a conundrum.

It depends on how much you love your E60. If you love it to the point of crying when you sell it, like I did, then keep the E60 and get the F80 to compliment your collection. The F80 can do everything well, except be luxurious. Get the F80 if you especially intend on tracking the car, that's almost what it was designed for.

The 14' F10 M5 will spoil you in every way though. It's better at everything except for being a great track car, although it can still kill a lot of cars on the track, even a C6 Z06, believe it or not.

Owning the F10 M5 is like owning a Private Jet. You can overtake nearly everything on the highway, all while listening to Beethoven in crystal clear surround sound and feeling like your butt is being massaged by female Thai masseuses.

The E60 and F80 are more raw and more satisfying in a raw race car kind of way.

The F10 is satisfying like flying from New York to Paris on the Concorde.

The F10 can deliver a nuclear strike to enemy cities in such a stealthy manner as a B-2 Bomber, where as the E60 M5 is like the B-1 Bomber at Full Afterburner, and the F80 is like the A-6 Intruder dodging enemy SAM's in Vietnam and drops its bombs.

--------------------------------

F10 is like, I can't believe it IS butter.

F80 is like, I can't believe it's NOT butter.

E60 is like, I don't even use butter.

--------------------------------

F10 is like the Panther Tank

E60 is like the Tiger Tank

F80 is like the T-34 Tank

--------------------------------

F80 is like a friendly Golden Retriever.

F10 is like a well trained German Shepherd.

E60 is like a rabid Pitbull.

Fiat Abarth is like a feisty Chihuahua. (Just had to throw that in there since, I own one. )
--------------------------------

F10 is like David Beckham's right foot.

F80 is like David Beckham's left foot.

E60 is like David Beckham's head.

--------------------------------

I hope I used enough Similes and Metaphors.
I'll think of more later.

If I owned all three cars, here's how I would use them:

F80 M3 - Daily Driver, TrackRat, Short Distance Trips, Baby and Pre-Teen kid hauler, and Drift Car.

E60 M5 - Weekend Car, Semi-TrackRat, Short/Medium Distance Trips, ///Mayhem Generator, Teen kid Hauler, and Semi-Drift Car.

F10 M5 - Daily Driver and Weekend Car, Long Distance Trips, Highway Destroyer, and Family Hauler.

I've still got an E60 M5 ad I had an F10 M5 as a replacement car when someone hit my E60, I loved the F10 and much much much preferred its DCT transmission over the E60's but even my son had to agree when we raced on the motorway that the E60 has more character and felt more alive, the technology and economy is far better in the F10 but you can't compare to the E60 and E39, I also had an E39 M5 but I must say that the E60 is better than the E39 but I do miss my clutch pedal

RPiM5 you make me feel horrible for never test driving E60 M5 though I have been a passenger in one before and test drove some E60 other models like 530i or something like that before I got my Acura TL 2008 which drove better than Bimmer back then !!
You guys really made me feel that I have to go and find one and test drive it and I have a feeling that I may like it more than F10 M5 -

Well now you have gone and totally confused me. That is basically my AW baby in that wonderful picture, yet I have been flirting with getting a new M5 or M6 Gran Coupe for months now. Test drove an M6 just a couple weeks ago and really appreciated the torque but I do love the rawness of the e60. I believe yours is one of the more raw F10s out there. Any chance you make it to the Great Falls C&C this weekend? I'd like to check it out as if I did upgrade to F10, I would probably want to at least mod the exhaust.

Lol! Mine has been described is THE most RAW F10 M5 out there. It can't get any more raw, besides doing an engine swap with a Lamborghini Aventador and straightpiping it! Lol! I can make it to Great Falls this weekend if you want to swing by.

Do you have an exhaust system on your E60 M5? The problem between the F10 M5 and the E60 M5 is a real Ying and Yang one. Both are so alike yet so different. They just have two different characters but if you can only have one, the F10 is definitely the one to own. Like I always say a high performance car is only as good as the road you are driving it on. There's almost no point to owning a high revving V10 that gets horrible gas mileage when can't consistently stretch it's legs, but on the same note there's almost no point in having a massive tidal wave of torque when you can't use it all. Therefore the F10 M5 will always win because it will always be superior in the low speed environment.

Then again, just disregard everything I say, because I confuse myself all the time too. In one way I want that NA V10 character back in my life, yet in another I want to keep the Space Shuttle level of accelerative (I know this isn't a word) torque in my life.

Just stop by great falls this weekend and we'll take each other for a ride and stuff.
