The new BMW M5 Saloon

16.11.2011

For more than 25 years the BMW M5 Saloon has defined the high-performance saloon segment, in the process becoming the most successful car of its type in the world. Now a new fifth-generation model raises the concept of the premium executive saloon combining track-car dynamics and supreme touring comfort to an even higher level.

It features the most potent engine ever devised by BMW’s high-performance M division, here making its world premiere, along with race-bred chassis technology that includes, for the first time, an Active M differential and electronic damping control. The unique exterior design has been dictated by the technical requirements of the car, while the luxurious sports car-like cockpit offers an extensive range of innovative driver assistance systems and mobility services.

The new M5 Saloon will be available in the UK in November 2011, priced at £73,040 on-the-road.

Such a reasonable price. What is that, like $100k U.S. about 20k more than previous? Or are we getting our usual dirt cheap prices compared with the rest of the planet...

Why M5 has a cheap plastic center console?

Can they just put a nice trim there like regular F10?

Call me conservative but I'd still like to have the black one.
Looks awesome.

It is actually not cheap plastic. It feels like leather, although I cannot be sure that it is. Certainly does not feel or look (in person) like cheap plastic.

I dont imagine they will start the M5 at 100.000 USD. It would really limit the sales of the car in the US market. If you look at the M3 for an example it is based at 54.600 British Pounds and at the same time it is base priced at 59.900 USD. If you use this as an example you can expect the M5 to base price in the US market at 80.000 USD. Well optioned, sure you can hit 100.000 USD but I would bet you won't see it as a base price. It just is not logical.

$80K is the ideal starting price point. Making it start at $100k would make it hard to compete in the super-sedan market when the competition (E63, S6, CTS-V) begins at $70K+

But I wouldn't be surprised if it starts at the same price as the E63 ($88K)

Review from some members who joined M5 driving experience in Spain. It is a black slap of plasticky trim, not like M sport aluminum trim.

Seems to be leather bonded... (at least I see the stitching)

The M5 center console/shifter trim is covered in black leather (either Novillo or Nappa) like in the M3 center console.

Sorry, I meant the area around the shifter and driving mode buttons.

Not the dashboard.

That's the area that I am referring to, "shifter trim".

The trim around the shifter area is black hard leather. However it does feel like plastic. I only realized it was leather when someone told me, but from looking at it and feeling it, it seemed like rubberized plastic just like the incipio feather iPhone case.
