Vanos issue S63tu

I just replaced all 4 solenoids and camshaft sensors after i found i had a vanos exhaust code. Car still saying vanos code also in limp mode. I was told the vanos gear needed to be replaced. Is there any other way to find out whats causing vanos issue without replacing the gear?

Let me guess. Also getting “cold start uncontrollable” and “lift values 2000%” ?

I’m chasing the same thing. Coils, plugs, solenoids, camshaft position sensors… all nothing.

Yeah man it might be the gear just trying to work my way around it so it doesn’t need replaced heard it’s a big job.

Vanos is a relatively simple system. If the oil was changed and the solenoids were replaced it’s 90% chance a gear replacement is required.

I’m going to do the chain while I’m there, it’s a big/expensive job labor-wise so why not just do some extra parts while you’re there. I’m at 106k, so I’m going to do chain/tensioner and cam gear

V8 timing chains are an astronomically larger job than just doing a gear (heads, oil pans both coming off, obviously engine removal)

The gear can be replaced with just removing the valve cover and front drive belt/ crank pulley

Not yet, have had some things pop up in life (lost my daughter to a brain tumor, 7yrs old). Car is on a battery tender in the garage. Been trying to keep my household together and figure out the next day as it comes. If you find a solution, please let me know. I’d like the answer or at least know what’s going on before I drop it somewhere for work.
