So I bought a 2nd mount and will get it scanned and look into a billet option. This with heat-treated or better bolts should do the trick.

Hope to keep this under $750 - which is a reasonable price since fixing it along with a new driveshaft etc. will cost more! Just replacing the mount is a relatively low labor content

If you're in the process of building an even more powerful motor, and wish to focus on straight line acceleration, I'll bet you've considered what DSS has to offer with their differential conversions. I hadn't looked at that part of their catalog before and was amazed at what they've done for IRS cars!

With the potential power of the 4.4 liter BMW engine, I wonder how long it will be before someone uses a more bullet proof rear end? The change would take away the sophistication of the stock diff for road course use, but if that isn't important it seems like a safer way to go. And you could change the rear brake so the use of actual mainstream slicks would give you some traction. Wheelie bars next?

The electronics of this car are so complicated, but might it be as simple as switching DSC off? If DSC is switched off, does that take the GHAS module out of the system? If that module isn't trying to control the differential, wouldn't the lack of feedback from it not be noticed by the ECU?

Or, is there a simple way to fool the ECU into thinking its control signals to the differential are being followed by some electronic trickery? Much easier than designing a standalone ECU I'd think. I wonder if the engine tuning shops have any knowledge of those functions?

Update:

The breakage points were:

1. Bolts holding the diff to the bracket
2. Bracket itself
3. Driveshaft CV joint (see pic)

Unsure of the sequence, but I am quite sure it is #1-#3 in that order. I inspected the bolts and they are just standard bolts that are used on suspension components with the only exception of having some sort of Loctite pre-applied (supposedly seals once screwed in)

That's crazy. Reminds me of my old e46 M3 days with the bolts that would back out of the diff . They changed the bolts near the end of the models life, but did not mention it. I wonder if those bolts have a new part number indicating BMW is aware of this failure point on the f10 M5 as well?

Funny you mention that, the previous owner of my X5M said he had that issue with the diff bolts backing out. It's something I'll be checking when I roll over 100k and have the diff and transfer case fluids replaced. As for the bolt changing part numbers over the years, I bet that can be researched via www.realoem.com since it shows applicability, revision dates, etc.

Here is something that cropped up - made by some of the East Coast shops I believe.

Looks interesting.

That's serious right there. Kind of like the old e36 bars guys made for boosted M3's way back in the day. Also has a kind of Mason engineering vibe to it as well. You going to try it out?

Raza,
I'd be interested if you make billet diff front and rear brackets. I was going to do something soon. I have spare brackets sitting here that I was planning to use as templates for my own billet parts.

Do you have pictures of the stock bracket? It's not difficult to CAD something for me because i have the scanning and post processing software.

feel free to text me at 253-271-9386
