Low engine oil warning

I just received the following warnings. Which engine oil is recommended? I don't get it because my car just returned from the BMW workshop (for different reasons) and I would assume they check these things regularly.

Also, I haven't driven this car a lot. I've only had the car for about 7 months and I bought it new. Should I even get this warning? My other 520d has been with me over 4 years and I never got this alert even once.

Perfectly normal for the M Turbo cars. I have to add about two quarts in between oil changes. If you have the maintenance package. BMW will top you off for free and for dealer always gives me an extra bottle.

Oh OK. Didn't know that. So I shouldn't attempt to top up myself? Is it some special oil? I'm not sure if I have the maintenance package but I'll find out. Thanks!

You can do it yourself. I have the package so I just do a drive up and they top off and I go. It's free with the maintenance package.

They use BMW Long Life 01 FE but you can use other alternatives to BMW like mobile 1 as long as it meets the requirements. Check your owners manual.

I'll see if I can find it. Should I not be using the car until I top up the oil?

You can, it's just a warning. I believe the computer gives you a warning not to exceed 125mile on that warning.

If your BMW comes with the maintenance program then your dealer is cheating you if they are a BMW dealer. It's all included in that program. I literally drive in, get topped off, and drive out. 10 minute job. I get a thanks for coming in and an extra bottle of oil every time. Haha

The extra bottle is courtesy on their part so don't expect that. At minimum you should be getting topped off for free if you're car includes that program.

The West LA dealers are absolute shit.

In the midwest when I bought my first set of BMWs I was treated like royalty, they would top off my M3 no questions asked, give me awesome loaners, strike up conversations about mods and such..

In LA they nickel and dime every transaction, give you enterprise cars as loaners (last one was a White Ford Focus Hatchback..), even make you pay for the loaners "$20 appointment fee per day" at Beverly Hills BMW.

What's more, this is BMWNAs largest market (SoCal), you'd think they would have it figured out over here. Pathetic !

Why is pathetic is BMW let's them get away with that. If my agreement and owners manual says I get maintenance and such I would be demanding it. But then again if they are all doing it you're shit out of luck.

We have a dealer like that here but not all

Try Pacific BMW in Glendale. I've had nothing but great experiences with both service and management.

Does this seem excessive? I'm not sure if customers in the UK are offered a maintainence package as I couldn't find anything like that in the docs.

Can anyone from the UK advise on where to get the oil online? Amazon lists it for £17 plus shipping so I don't get the £189 charge from the dealer.

Found this. Anyone have any feedback on this website? I don't want to end up with the wrong oil or non-genuine stuff.

Hey !

Call your dealer and give them your number plate and confirm whether your car has the Maintenance Package or not.

You are confusing an oil service with adding a simple litre of oil.

Shell supply oils for our cars now.

Shell Helix Ultra Professional AM-L 5W 30 :

http://www.shell.co.uk/motorist/oils...VGdDhQbDlVVw==

This is the one to go for if you do NOT have the maintenance package where BMW will top up your oil for FREE. You can get it for about £10 a litre.

You can also buy the correct BMW oil from your dealership too of course but costs more but comes in a BMW branded bottle. You then simply open the oil fill cap and add 1 litre of oil and then close the cap

Any questions, please feel free to ask !

Thanks for that info. So basically the "branded" BMW M Twinturbo engine oil is not better in any way?

I doubt it.

Also the one you have highlighted seems to be incorrect.

We need a BMW Long Life 04 rating not 01 rating.....I think.

Does the Shell oil you mention meet that long life 04 rating? I've already ordered it online.

I had this happen after my first oil change. The mechanic forgot to tighten the valve at the bottom of the car after draining out the old oil. I picked up the car from dealership, drove maybe 5 miles when I got this warning. I had to go back and the dealership was super embarrassed, apologized profusely, and fixed up the mistake.

Ask them to check for that.
