I like it - don't love it

So, I've now owned my f10 m5 for 6 months and I'm having a hard time falling in love with this car. I have no doubt this is the BEST car I've ever owned but there's something missing. It's a bit like dating a girl who's "great on paper" but I just can't seem to pinpoint the underlying problem. I keep thinking about my "ex" - the e60 m5 and how wild she was. Again, don't get me wrong, the F10 is an awesome car! It's fast, classy, hassle free and growls WOT but it's missing that feeling I used to get when I'd get into the e60. I almost felt like I was going into battle every time I'd start up the e60 and now when I start up the f10 I feel like I should be holding some grey-poupon or something. Maybe i'm just going through v10 withdrawals and perhaps this is normal. The weird thing is I wouldn't want to go back to the e60 after owning the f10. I'll tell you what does seem to help, anytime I think about the e60 I always try to remember the times the e60 left me stranded and how much $$$ she'd cost when "S" hit the "F". Am I the only one who keeps looking back at the ex and wonders if maybe I could have just made it work?

Loved my E60. Love my F10 much more. The F10 is a Better car. The ONLY thing I really miss about my E60 was the V10 scream at 8000 rpm. That was a one of a kind experience.

I have similar feelings about my E39 M5. Unlike you however, I think that was the best car I've ever owned.

I'm having the same exact issue. I've owned my F10 for about 5 months and i like it a lot but every time i get behind the wheel I find myself thinking about my E46 M3. The F10 is FAR more superior but for some reason Im having a hard time loving the F10 like I loved my M3

I miss the sound of the RPI FROM MY e60, but that's about it. I like literally every other aspect of the F10 significantly more.

Think it comes down to weight, weight numbs everything- steering, brakes, reactions and feel etc

I'm 3 weeks into my F10 M5 and I'm acquiring a love for her. My previous was a 2014 Corvette Stingray and before that an E92 M3. The Vette made me forget about the E92, but the F10 still has me missing the Vette. For me, the M5 is more practical and it's what i consider subtle insanity. It's not the same visceral experience as the E92 or the Vette. It doesn't grumble or scream. It's not a scalpel like the E92 or chainsaw like the Vette. It's like a very sharp and very expensive chef's knife. It will cut you before you know it, but its so comfortable in your hand, you almost forget you're holding something so sharp and fine.

Now, when I get on it and drive it hard, I drive it hard. But it just feels different. When I flung the corvette or E92 into a corner, I felt every inch of the road and I knew I was going fast; I felt the speed, the road. In the M5, I can go into the corner just as fast but it feels slow and maybe a bit too comfy.

But as someone stated above, it's probably the best car I've owned as well. It might be the one car that can be both a family sedan and a weekend fun/track car. It does the combined job well, but falls a tad short of each job individually. But when measuring where it falls short, I'm thinking inches and not feet.

All things are relative, getting out of a NA V10 into a forced induction engine will always feel wrong - I did not have such issues, as my previous car was a 535d Touring and compared to that, the F10 M5 is a rocket ship that puts a smile on my face every time !

Plus also, drive it at anything over 7/10ths and it shrinks around you & I have no issues feeling the weight transfer, despite the car being so heavy - but feels too fast for virtually any road

Nope I never look back to see what I missed because what I have is so much better. Your just having withdraws and can't get over your new power. Like Rob said start modding and place a tune on her and you'll see the light

I think I have a unique perspective....

I have had the F10 since April. I also have an E60. I routinely drive them back to back. The E60 is the only car in the ///M5 lineage that I feel is/was completely over the top. V10 in a sedan - check, SMG - check, engine/power/suspension settings - check, silly fuel economy - check, etc. It's special, unique and completely impractical. It's also finicky, fragile and insanely expensive to maintain. Great rig.

The F10 is bigger, more comfortable, more refined and insanely fast and fun to drive. Feels more like an evolution of the E39 rather than the E60. It's growing on me more and more - but it definitely does not have the razor's edge feel of the E60. I like it a lot - but it is different.

Well said. How do you like that E63S Wagon though?

Coming from an E90 M3, I agree with a lot of what has already been said here. Even during my ED Trip, I realized right away the M3 was more fun to drive, "better" exhaust note, more fun in the corners, etc. I just learned to appreciate the M5 for what it is. It's definitely a more refined/ luxurious machine. I also appreciate the size and bells/ whistles that the M3 didn't have. Being that I'm 6'4", the M5's size is a plus as well.

I've had my F10 M5 for a year and a half now. Best car I've ever had. So much that I'm considering buying one when my lease is up next year.

Start modding! F10 is a great car, but i think most of its charm is the ability to tweak it to whatever power, sound you wants so easily.

Get it to 650 whp with some downpipes and you'll forget all about your screaming ex. You really need to get under [another car] to get over the ex.

If you aren't already, always Sport Plus for throttle response, and MDM mode on (be careful, if not familiar with the decreased traction control). Otherwise, gets some DPs and/or exhaust aftermarket, as others have suggested.

A lot of you keep saying "start modding" Change the exhaust, the intake chip it Etc. You start loosing the car that BMW intended.

With the E46 I didn't have to mod it to love it!
