Thoughts on going from 550 xDrive to new M5?

Greetings,

I am new to Bimmerpost, however, have been a member of Bimmerfest for many years. I have owned a number of BMW's over the years and love the brand.

Over the last few months, I have been contemplating switching from my 550 xDrive M Sport to a new M5. I have a loaded 550 xDrive M Sport which I really enjoy.

I would be curious if anyone has recently done the same thing and what their thoughts are regarding the switch.

Particularly, thoughts on whether there is a significantly noticeable difference in performance and drive ability and whether it is worth the price jump.

Thank you.

Tom

I would say if you don't care about Xdrive then go for it. If you do need it then perhaps wait for the next gen M5 which will likely offer Xdrive.

The difffrence is day and night! ask soooma since he went the same route... he can give you a list of difference and I'm sure you will switch to M5 immediately

I switched from a 550xi to a M5. It's night and day between the two. As someone else said, if you don't need/want AWD then the M5 is the better drive by a big margin.

I did the switch as well. 2011 M-Sport 550xi to 2013 M5.

My 550 was auto, and aside from the M-Sport and executive seats it was base.

My M5 is 6MT and has every feature available.

As different as they are, I still love and miss my 550xi sometimes... I was never a fan of BMW AWD till I had the 550xi for a few months, more so when I did a BMS S2 tune on it. To me, they're two different cars.... geometrically the same, but everything is so different and they are both great and fun to drive in their own way. The xDrive was amazing in the snow, especially with snow tires, thats when the car shined in its glory, I was unstoppable... The M5 however, being a 6MT puts me in great sync with the car, a feeling only 6MT drivers would understand.

The 550xi gave me more confidence in shittier weather, but the M5 tickles my guts everytime I open her up, so as similar both cars, they are very different to me... I honestly wish I can own both cars.

I can go about how different and similar both cars are for pages, but at the end of the day... it comes down to the type of driver you are. I'm a spirited driver and love ripping my cars apart. I put nearly 20K miles a year on my car, and currently being in the M5, sometimes I wished I still owned the 550i, but most of the time I wouldn't trade any of my time spent in the M5 for any other BMW.

My M5 is only $150 more per month on a lease, so it was a no brainer for me.

We Can make a 550i engine with upgraded compression almost to be identical to the s63 and tuning and call it a day all the same parts done to the m5's are transferable to the n63 engines (downpipes exhaust and tuning)
