Recently purchased a 2014 M5 the vehicle was local to Florida and sold at auction to a dealer in North Carolina. I brought the vehicle with me to NJ where the temp was right around 1 degree a couple days ago. I was headed to work around 4am and noticed that the car would not warm up.. shortly after letting the car sit for a few minutes I started to drive hoping it was just since it was so cold it would take a few. I then get a notification to drive moderately engine temp exceeded or something to that effect. Then going down the interstate I noticed that there was a smoke screen behind me. I decided to turn around and get my truck good thing I did. Went to the dealer the next day which was New Years and dropped it off. The dealer calls me 2 days later saying all the coolant is frozen inside the engine. He said typically when they see that it's because a dealer in a milder climate used more water than coolant or they were just being cheap and used water. Either way if you go from mild temps to the extreme cold make sure you check the proper coolant water mixture. Needless to say I now need a new engine.

something doesn't sound right though. Had the car always been maintained at a BMW dealership? I'm pretty sure the dealership coolant will be all-weather for NA. I doubt the dealership is mixing coolant concentrate.

Or can anyone who know dealership operations confirm? BMW probably sells coolant concentrate for dealerships who service cars in colder regions so they can actually mix it, but I'm going to bet, US dealers aren't doing it and using the premixed stuff off the shelf.

a car 100% serviced at the dealership, just outside of warranty expiration. I would guess they're likely to cover close to 100% of it. It's in the goodwill timeframe.

As of this morning the SA said they were thawing the block and going to put fresh fluids and check pressure and full diagnostic check.

Wow! No dealership should ever skimp on Antifreeze, as it doesn't just keep things from freezing. It acts as an anticorrosive and lubricates the water pump. I cannot believe a BMW dealership would have done this. They have specific checks when changing fluids.
This must have been a Indy shop, or previous owner.

Not sure this still exists at BMW ...

unless something has changed recently, it definitely exists. I've read it somewhere that it's based on a formula of days/months past expiration and mileage past the 50k mark. It's a rolling scale from 100% down to 0%. And as with a legal contract such as a warranty, they're not technically liable for anything outside of warranty, so corporate has full discretion how they want to apply the goodwill. Your SA should be the one that goes to bat for you on convincing corporate to cover any or all of it.

The fact the car was 100% serviced at a dealership and just outside of warranty and if it definitely below 50k miles, I'm going to bet it'll get close to 100% goodwill.

I hope for the sake of the OP you’re right.

In South Florida, cars are getting flagged for just about anything including after-market wheels. SA’s can certainly help but in the end it’s not in their hands. Blown engines are a major expense and scrutinized heavily when in warranty let alone out of warranty.

Like I said, I hope I’m wrong for the sake of the OP.

unfreakinbelievable guys... apparently that car has had the engine replaced in it once before in 2016. SA in NJ cannot get history on it because it was under previous owners name.. dealer in Florida refused to provide any detailed information on the vehicle citing privacy laws.

If the engine was replaced through BMW then they should have no problem pulling the service / repair history. Before I bought any of my cars I shoot my local dealership a call with the vin and they give me full service records on the car. I hope you get through this bud, sucks.

ok guys, latest update.

according to SA hoses were not routed properly when engine was previously installed. that problem was corrected and all fluids drained and refilled. checked compression and other diagnostics and everything is supposedly fine. what do you guys think? i had heard that if anything inside the engine coolant or otherwise freezes the block is ruined. thoughts? comments? concerns? Thanks

If it didn't crack the radiator and just turned slushy, I think you'll be ok. If it was frozen rock solid, the radiator would have most likely cracked too.
