M5 Needs Oil

Just got a warning that my M5 needs some oil asap.

Has anyone else had this ? If so, what oil did you (or your dealer) add ?

Thanks in advance

Can't comment on the M5 but my M3 and 335 used a bit of oil in the first 5000 km. It should settle down.

There is some debate on what oil to use for the S63Tu. Best to call dealer and talk to a real expert there.

OT but how has the car been working? Any update to your original owner thread ? Thx.

I had the same message coming up.

Just add one litre of Castrol or Mobile one Fully Synthetic Oil

Mine prompted me to add 1 litre of oil last week. Went to the dealer on Monday and they topped it up. Was told it's no issue.

It asked me for 1 liter of oil too. Dealership said it's normal. Looks like 1L/2000 km oil burn.

Thanks for all the responses. Good to know it is not unusual. I have an xdrive50i X5 which chews through oil like petrol so am hoping the M5 does not go the same way.

Not really too much to update. I was going to wait until the 2000k break in service before I gave a more in depth update.

What I can say at the moment is the car's power is really very very difficult to use on the street. Anytime I put the foot down (and I mean anytime) I get the traction light flashing at me. I think the only real place you can explore the power without the light coming on is on the track (mind you having said that in the couple of times I have driven the M5 on the track in Spain and in Australia I managed to get the light blinking at 170k+ so maybe my analysis is not right !).

When I put the car in MDM to try and reduce the light flashing I get so much noise from the rear tyres that it is a little embarrassing.

I am sure I will find the right solution, just a matter of time.

I love the fact that most people don't know what the car is or what it is capable of. I am liking that more and more. It really is stealth.

Apart from that I am happy with the car now as I was on day 1.

I have a couple of minor gripes:

1. rolling bar sound in the rear;
2. oil (although that sounds like it is normal)
3. in such a well designed interior it is bugging me that the trunk release button looks like it has been added as an afterthought down in the footwell (small point but once you notice things like that it is hard to let them go)
4. I liked in the M3 the subtle differences between each of the 6 DCT settings in each mode - I would prefer to have more than the 3, but I am just that kind of guy
5. putting stop start on a 560hp V8 is crazy - I want a way to disable it permanently so that I don't have to do it every time I start it. I can't get used to the car stopping all the time.

Apart from these things I am loving the car. The sound from the engine is just brilliant. The whooosh of the turbos under load it quite intoxicating.

I got the oil warning at around 1200 Kms give or take

I agree with you on the rolling bar sound

The best configuration for driving daily is the Efficient comfort comfort and the gear torque at one and the traction tends to kick in less as the new tire grip becomes better

This happened to me last week and I topped up with a litre of Castrol 03W, which is recommended in the manual.

There is no debate from BMW.
The S63 uses the regular BMW LL-01 Approved oils as per BMW technical literature.

So "BMW full synthetic",Castrol 5W-30, Mobil 1 0W-40 ect ect with the LL-01 Approval on the bottle.

3. Its the standard place BMW put it. they have been doing so for decades.

4. Last time they put more settings and everyone complained there were too many.

5. Stop start will be required on all Euro cars soon. So even Ferrari is testing it to go in their cars. By law there they cannot make it default off anymore.

You shouldnt be driving it in "D" then should you! Once youre using the paddles that doesnt happen! They assume that if youre cruising around in D that you wont mind that kind of thing, which I think is fair.

I know there was some scrapping with the X5M/X6M guys about the oil, wasnt sure if the problem was resolved. Thx.

Didnt see those threads.
BMW has had the correct recommendations up on their technical system since before the cars were released.

I have already used 2 extra litres and I haven't even reached 1000 miles yet. Is this normal?

M engines have always used oil, especially when new.

A lot of the auto journalists reported this too (unfortunately in Australia and abroad), also difficulty powering out of a corner because of lack of traction

I'm considering an M6, I wonder if it'll have the same traction control probs....just too much power to the rear wheels.

I didn't realize that my M would eat oil so it made me nervous when I saw the message telling me to add oil today. However, I made it to around 3300 miles before it came up, so I guess I should be happy?!
