Hard Braking Fixed My Squealing Brakes
I thought I'd write this thread in case someone searched for squealing brake fixes as I did when I got my M5 last week. It took a bit of reading to finally see one thread where a few members posted about trying the pad bedding in procedures to burn off or clean off whatever was stuck to the pads or rotors. I found a local highway that had little traffic at night and I hit 100 km/h and slammed my brakes hard without coming to a full stop. Did that a bunch of times and then slowly lowered the speed 20 km/h each stop until about 40. After that drove for 10 minutes with no braking to cool down the brakes and repeated the process again.
That did the trick though. Today my brakes are quiet on even the slowest and gentlest of braking. Not sure how long it will stay this way before it needs to be done again but it's better than spending bucks to swap fairly new stock pads. What's funny is that I read the Driving Tips in the manual and under the title of Correct Braking, it states, "To keep the brake system in optimum condition, it is expedient to apply them at regular intervals corresponding to the vehicle character." I am wondering if that was translated from German. I guess they mean you should drive your M5 the way it was meant to be driven, fast and aggressive. So there you have it. Oh I'm also trying out the ArmorAll Quicksilver Brake Dust Repellent. Reviews seem positive so I'll report back later on whether it kept the wheels pristine or not. |

There's no one size fits all solution. I can do that, and I do and they will still sound like a freight train braking when driving casually on the way back home from a hard drive.

Yes I get it too from time to time but only in traffic,its all very well doing emergency stops from fast speeds to clear it for a while but all that does is bring the pad change date closer.

I just had my brake fluids replaced today and I'm guess they must have cleaned the rotors or pads or something because now it squeaks like a mofo again, just like when i picked up the car initially. Ugh.. I guess I'm going to have to do it again.

Solidified brake dust in cooling holes.
Another way you may reduce squeal is by using a low power high pressure washer;carefully blast the brake dust gunge out of the cooling holes in the discs then take it for a ride after you've done it to dry them out.
*By the way I just bought some of that ArmorAll brake dust repellant you suggested Vancouver_M5, there's nothing worse than constantly cleaning your 343M's after a hundred miles or so. Last edited by M5Rick; 08-13-2018 at 11:27 AM.. |

Yeah... it doesn't take 100 miles, more like 1 week. It definitely seems to help though my car got washed at the dealer last week and it seems to have taken off the coating. They use an automated washer at the dealer so the super harsh chemicals probably didn't do it any favors. I'll reapply and see how it goes. It worked well for the week I had it on.

Hard braking fixed it for a few miles and it came back ...the only way I fixed the squeal was to install these pads in the front;
"Power Stop 17-1648 Z17 Evolution Plus Clean Ride Ceramic Brake Pad with Premium Hardware Kit Included"

Unfortunately I enter inner London every so often and it's a slow crawl touching the brakes stop/start like today but wait NO brake dust on the fronts when I got back where there is usually a film before I applied that AA spray.When I get a chance I'll do the rear wheels.
*Some of you guys use 93 octane on your modified M5's?? how come, here its only 98/99 octane recommended for these motors. |
