Competition Package for M5 Daily Driver

I know the benefits of the M5 Competition Package ("CP") have been discussed at length in various posts, but what's not clear to me is whether the CP is something that makes daily driving better or worse. For example, I've read certain reviews (e.g., C&D stating that the "Competition pack never lets the driver forget he’s sacrificed comfort on the altar of trackworthy performance") suggesting the CP makes daily driving less comfortable, resulting in a rougher ride, etc.

Accordingly, my question is -- for an M5 that is likely to never see a track, is the CP a waste of money that will potentially make daily driving less enjoyable? Other than (i) the different exhaust; (ii) lower ride height; and (iii) different wheels (assuming I go with the 601s), are there any benefits to having the CP on an M5 daily driver?

I appreciate any information/insight you can provide. Thanks.

You will certainly get varying opinions on whether it's worth it or not. That's another topic. I have never thought the CP was too harsh for my daily driver. For my tastes, I will always lean towards a firmer suspension if I have the choice. Plus we have good roads here in Texas. I drove both before I purchased and I didn't see it as an issue. I would recommend trying that if you have the opportunity.

I never drove a non CP car so I don't know how much softer it would have been.

Here in AZ we have really smooth roads with not many potholes so I am glad I got the CP. I daily drive it and don't have a single complaint.

However, I moved from an E90 M3, so even the CP is a softer ride than that.

Love the ride and exhaust in the CP. We get bad roads in winter and it's still fine. I would do it again.

Personally, I'd order it if I could justify the additional cost as I like the overall package of wheels/exhaust/stance. I'll be leasing and would like the payment to be under $1K so no CP for me.

I could not distinguish any difference in driving experience from multiple b2b test drives on normal roads and freeways with or without the CP package.

Carlos Lago has a good review on the CP. He's obviously not judging based as DD however

Driving the M5 with ZCP is very comfortable. I don't track, and am happy with my choice.

I have only about 600mi on my non cp m5. It is my daily driver. The cp would not be bad for a dd, but I don't think it is necessary. If you were going to track the car then probably would make sense. Although I don't yet see why people want to track their family sedan, a whole separate issue.

I would buy it again.
I am sure is as comfortable or uncomfortable as a non cp.
Dont expect a kind of ferrari or aston comfort. Those, yes, they are really not for dd. i have driven the 599, 458 and the vantage and they are kind of special, but not to drive your kids to school or go downtown regularly. Those are not cars for dd. I drive mine daily.

Perfect as a DD. That is not a negative that should factor into your decision.

I had 2012 Non CP F10 M5 as a daily driver and put on over 50,000kms before trading it to 2014 F10 M5 CP. I've now driven it just short of 1,000kms within last few days so it may not to right time to comment but...

It's perfect car as a daily driver taking my son to his school and so on. The ride is a bit firmer than my 2012 but that is not a negative to me at all. It's not uncomfortable like I felt in 2009 Nissan GTR. Everything else, if the firmer ride is a negative, is a big plus. Better sound, better, sharper & quicker response from engine, steering and etc...AND BETTER LOOKING AS WELL! In NZ, there was no option to choose NON CP as all M5 & M6 sold since late 2013 were offered as CP models only. However, I wouldn't have chosen NON CP if I was asked.

I daily drive this bad boy on the streets of SF and I don't find the ride harsh. I love the steering feel and it's great for mountain carving on the weekends.

I live in NJ and I have a CP M5 as a daily driver. The roads here can be pretty bad, but I feel the M5 performs fairly well especially in comfort mode and I definitely don't have any regrets getting the CP. My wife even takes the M5 once in awhile to work in Jersey City through the rough roads and she even says the ride is fairly smooth compared to her X5.

+1 it's embarrassing pulling up to a traffic light with those squealing brakes.

My CP M5 is a daily driver. I am fortunate enough to drive on a clean flat, pot hole free roads. Plus I drive my wife and baby every weekend on Sports plus, not a peep from the two

love my ZCP as a DD
the only downside is that it is lower
you have to be careful going into steep driveways
i do not think the ride is harsh
my wife may not agree
good luck

In the ZCP Competition Package, you have the option to switch to 343M wheels at no extra cost.

In South Africa for instance, most of the M5 cars with competition package ditch the 601M and just opt for 343M wheels.

I've seen that trend here in the States as well where dealers have opted to order the ZCP with the 343M wheel option. Two are sitting that way on local lots here in the Seattle area.

IMHO - they provide a more aggressive look.

I have a CP. No issue for a DD. If your coming form and S - class Merc you may have an issue that is not super soft. On the other hand my wife does complain of the ride.

I have since swapped my CP springs and sways for the Dinan set. The CP is 20% stiffer while the Dinan is 15% more than stock. The Dinan ride quality exceeded my expectations. I was really on the fens about changing out my CP springs but it was money worth spending. The car feels more even on the harsh Houston roads without compromising the ride/track quality. On hard turns the cars does not roll and maintains its rail like feeling.

In my option the Dinan springs and sways are a worth while add on to any M5 cp or not. They really have the spring rates perfect (in my opinion of course).

Agreed

In some countries though, if you opt for ZCP/7MA Competition Package, you may have to add extra to get those wheels........but it's a small fee.

For instance, BMW UK will charge an extra 600-700 UK Pounds if you want 343M wheels in color black (2TY)

But it's a small price to pay..........in exchange for infinitely better-looking stock wheels
