Dct On/off/mdm
I normally drive with dct on. How different is mdm? Will I be scared for my life or will it just let the car drift a little more and then correct so still pretty hard to go into a spin on a dry road? Any experience with DCT off? I assume that is scary and easy to put the car into a spin? I need to find a big parking lot to experiment in. Thanks

Lol I think you mean DSC, not the Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT). But yes, I would also suggest trying it out in a big parking lot to get a feel for MDM and full DSC off before messing around with it on a public road.

M Dynamic Mode (MDM): MDM gives the performance-oriented driver the option of driving the car with controlled float angle and longitudinal slip without DSC intervening. The control system intervenes only when the physical limits are exceeded.
with that said, MDM is part of DSC, it means DSC is still active, but let you more slip (fun before intervening... you can drift a little when MDM is active and it's safe on dry road as long as you don't want to push the car hard specially at corners! on wet road it's different story. It's as dangerous as DSC ON (I know I'm exaggerating a bit and it's on purpose since I want to get your attention). DSC ON is extremely dangerous in street specially for these big, heavy, powerful M5/M6s. So, it's highly recommended NOT SELECTING DSC OFF OR MDM until you get used to this car. a big and wide area are good starting point.

It took me months before i got comfortable driving in MDM which i do about 80% of the time im driving now. I once forgot i had it on and it started raining whilst i was driving in Manhattan and i was doing about 30mph and drove over one of those big metal covers they put on the road for road work and i almost went sideways!!! DSC off tho is not for the faint of heart! I still dont have the balls to take DSC completely off.

You will definitely learn to drive the car better if you learn to drive with the control set in MDM the majority of the time.
You'll find that if you stab the gas that this is not the way to go. Instead, "rolling on" the power until you find the typical brake point for your surface is best. |

On the track, I always told my students that traction control really isn't an issue if you are driving smoothly. I would have no problem getting around Phoenix International Raceway (road course) with the traction control fully active. To the OP, one thing to keep in mind, no amount of traction control can beat the laws of physics.

Unless you are at the track, or an autocross event, I just would not bother with MDM on or DSC off. Even if you are careful, with so much torque in these cars, it is just too easy to get the rear end sideways, which is not the smartest thing to do in traffic. It does not make you any less of a driver, just a smarter one. IMO, that also applies to using launch control on the streets.

DSC when puttering around town is fine... but who putters around.
MDM is great. You can have fun and get loose but still have a little safety net. Forced myself to use DSC for 1st track session. Felt like 400HP. Light blinking all the time. Car sluggish in turns and when accelerating. CCBs were smoking when I pulled off. Went to MDM and things were fine. Don't be afraid of MDM. Be careful going no DSC with 560-575HP. |

DSC OFF, S3, Sport+, Sport+
+ downpipes, +BMS tune, +100oct gas (sometimes) I make my bitch lean sideways like shes on that purp. (LOL) All day, every day -- except the rain, then I turn DSC on otherwise it gets annoying losing traction all the time.

Nice, I spent some time there with Skip Barber when I was reviewing their 2 Day driving school.

I've spun out several times with MDM on a track and I think this mode is dangerous, especially in the wet. IMHO, DSC should be either completely ON or OFF. MDM is good for getting more traction at traffic lights.

I would never track in anything but MDM. I also enjoy MDM off-track when I am willing to pay more attention to corners and breaking loose on shifts in D3. But if I am driving hard off-track - around other cars - then DSC is on.
I love MDM, but almost 600HP with this much torque can break your tires loose while passing if you aren't paying attention. |
