Interestingly enough, the High Performance Drivers Education (BMW CCA HPDE) sessions I have attended, meaning for me Summit Point Raceway in nearby West Virginia, are basically on, rain or shine.

Being a newbie at the session a year ago, and thus in the "beginners" category D, I was just short of terrified when our 3rd session of the 4 for the day was in a "torrential downpour". And that was to be our session where we teamed up with another car and did passing drills. In the fourth session the rain had stopped but the track was still mighty slick.

As you might expect, I am way less talented than the Ring taxi drivers, and driving at my limits in the rain was rather nerve-wracking. All ended well, but I was a bundle of nerves. One might argue that the best training you can receive is on a wet track (one big wet skid pad), but driving your own car at higher rates of speed than you would do on the public roads in the wet is rather thrilling. I can imagine what it was like for the poor instructor. The track was really slippery. My shoes at that time were the OEM RFT Bridgestones. I'm glad the weather report for my next one this coming Saturday is so far forecast to be dry. I don't want to prang my car into something either.

It gives you a new and more profound respect for the F1 guys racing in the rain. The Ring taxi experience is also one that I would love to have, but in the rain I might have to decline.

I had one of these pass me like I was standing still while drifting sideways through a hard series of corners last time I was on the Ring. I tackled those corners at 80mph, so I could only imagine what the pro's in the Ring taxi's can pull off. Then I sat down on one of the good viewing points on the Nordschleife for a few hours and watched these guy's blow pass every single car that came around the corner like mad men on crack. This was probably a combo of wet track traction loss and the car taken to it's limits at extreme high-speed. glad to hear nobody was seriously hurt.

Am I the only who thinks that if no one was hurt then it should have been an awesome experience for the passengers? I wouldn't mind being a passenger if no-one was hurt at all.

Car held up pretty good, I am assuming this F10 was pushed to its limits and the occupants (I hope) survived.

Actually, you get more control with RWD since you know where the rear at and can predict which way the car will slide and, with this feedback still have a chance to recover from a slide...

On the contrary, with AWD, once control is lost and, since all four wheels are spinning and often not four at all but some... it is just unpredictable! If you ever lost control in AWD, you'd know what it's like.

I think this goes back to the overall dynamics of the car. With that motor, the power deliver isn't always linear. Sometimes on exit or mid corner it can over rotate because of how the power comes on when you apply the gas, despite being smoothe or knowing the car well. Randy Pobst was complaining and complaining about corner exit on the M6 @ Laguna, the surge of power isn't exactly predictable and frequently just roasts the tires at the limit with small inputs. It's good for an FI car, but it's no naturally aspirated car and it's quite hard to read what's going on through the drivers butt with all that insulation.

I am not surprised I am seeing/reading stories of F10's spinning and wrecking. If I remember correctly I have seen or read about more of these cars going off than E60's and E90's combined.

Poor Civic M5. The ZCP M5 wouldn't have crashed.

Most cars would fold in half and or roll over... yet M5 is all in one piece and all passengers walked away...

It is pretty badass. What other car company offers this?
I like to see these things pushed instead of having a boring life of being a over waxed garage queen.

+1

These drivers are pros and sometimes even pros find the limit.

If everyone was safety, insulated driving focused we'd live in a world of AT's, lane departure warning, auto start/stop and preventative braking cars. Oh wait...

Torrential downpour is easy -- the limits in those conditions are very obvious. Same with ice (which NCC BMW CCA has run on the Jefferson Circuit at Summit Point before). The worst is light rain in somewhat cold conditions.
