Does the M5 have enough traction?

So now that the M5 has been on the streets for while, I pose this question to all M5 owners....Are you happy with the overall traction/grip provided by the M5?

I am seriously looking at an M5 or M6 to be my next car, but I am concerned that the amount of power and torque is simply too much for rear wheel drive and/or the chosen tire sizing.

Obviously the DSC comes into play, but this technology still is far from perfect. The ideal DSC system should be imperceptible in its function, and that still doesn't happen.

So.....what's the verdict?

Thanks.

The car is traction limited up to 3rd gear for sure, but after that you are sure glad you have the torque. On the highway I'm in 5th or higher (you wouldn't want to go screaming down the highway in 2nd gear at 7000 RPM!). Every ounce of engine torque is used when accelerating in 5th gear at normal highway speeds. So, sure, it has more torque than you need accelerating off the line and you have to modulate the accelerator, but that's true in every decent car.

I'm sure 1st and 2nd gear are useless. Big traction issues for my M3 with only 295 lb of torque, so I imagine the M5 has at least the same.

It's pretty hard for DSC to be imperceptible when it is limiting enormous amounts of power. Just easy on the throttle and you'll be fine. I leave the car in comfort most of the time so the car progressively loads the rear tires, seems to be working.

I live in Saudi Arabia and the roads are pretty dry and hot all year round, so I suffer tremendously with the lack of traction on the rear tire. I am thinking of changing the tires and going with a 305/30/20 Bridgestone Potenza RE070 Extreme Summer Tire

What tires you have on your car?

I have PS2 and about to replace them with PSS

I don't know that there is going to be a huge difference between PS2 and PSS. I love Michelin because they are a light tire, but if I was searching for maximum traction, they wouldn't be my first choice. I changed the stock Continentals on my M3 to PSS, but...1) the Conti's really suck and 2) the M3 is a much lighter and more dynamic type of car. Bridgestones may be the way to go with the M5, despite the fact that they are a heavy tire.

The fact that this car has power far in excess of its traction capabilities is half the fun. Tire size and compound are adequate. Just massive power.

Going to 315 on the rear when my HREs arrive. Hope to get a bit more bite off the line. In D3 MDM yesterday for a very slight roll after car in front of me turned and got out of the way I spun a bit in 1st and 2nd kicked the rear end out pretty far. Mine is tuned however. I will be on 21x9.5 and 21x11. Will report if traction improves. I do agree with others that you just need to learn to modulate the throttle at low speeds. A nice trade off for all that glorious torque.

So you have PSS and still facing traction issues?

I read everywhere that dry traction for PSS is very good....some were saying that in 2nd gear they could not spin the tires....if true then it's wonderful.

PSS has better traction than Bridgestone. Check the instrumented test on Tire Rack.

I have PSS and they spin 2nd easily. Much better than Bridgestone tires however.

Maybe the M3 won't spin the PSS in 2nd so easily....hopefully.

What tires are you fitting on your new HREs?

I think this is a great question. I have 305s on my M3, and I still break loose under hard acceleration in 2nd gear. I don't think I would even consider getting a 6MT in the M5 with such massive amounts of TQ/HP. I need to get behind the wheel of one, but I think lack of traction would annoy me. It is this reason I will probably end-up getting a S6/RS6 when my S4 lease is up.

Mine is DCT. With either trans you get used to modulating the throttle.

Traction light on the whole time at first. I came from an R35 so have adjusted my driving and now feel like 'I'm driving'... Very rewarding...
