Heads Up Display

9 months into my M5 ownership, I cannot believe how I used to drive cars without a heads up display. In my mind one of the most useful features of the car.

Surprised that there aren't a lot of other high end cars that offer this feature. Which begs the question, what other cars offer this?

Sadly I dont have it on mine. Really upset about that. The manufacturer that actually invented the heads up display is Corvette I believe. Cadillac cars also have them. not sure what other brands have them. I love it too though. wish I had it

GM pioneered this technology back in the 80's with Oldsmobile. I first saw the technology in my friend's Pontiac Gran Prix in the 90's. Corvettes feature an HUD, as I believe do a few Benzs'.

The new Corvette has it as well as the new M3/4. We had it on our 93 Nissan Altima so it has been around for a while. The Altima's HUD wasn't anywhere near as good as the M5's but it was still pretty cool. I am spoiled by the M5's HUD. I really like how it appears to be projected out by the hood (bonnet). And I love the graphics on the Nav where it shows all the lanes and where you should be. It has become almost a must for me on my next car. I wish Porsche and Jaguar had it.

That's right...........I remember one of my friends had a simple heads up on their Pontiac back then. And of course, forgot the Corvette.

I miss it in my Porsche but they do have the digital readout for the speedo right below the tach which is almost as good.

The Peugeot 508 has this as well.

The one I test drove had a Heads Up Display with digital speedometer readout

The facelift ones will add GPS satnav route guidance (if available), Speed Limiter Warning (if activated) as well as Cruise Control speed.

Mazda 3 has HUD and so does the new Audi's (2015 A6 for sure). But none are as cool as the BMW's.

The HUD is great at night, but during the day I barely see it unless I tilt my head. All my sunglasses are polarized and have tried non-polarized, but the clarity it provides outweighs my need to see the HUD.

The HUD is most helpful for navigation where I can keep my eyes on the road and never miss a turn.

Same for me. At first I found it really annoyed me, but then now I so used to it, I feel weird driving cars without that feature. Oh, and I can not park a car without parking sensors and cameras anymore sigh.......

A real heads up display is one that projects onto the windshield. Those that are projected onto a piece of dedicated glass are IMO not a true heads up.

The new S Class now has it as of 2015 model year. It works pretty well on my S65 AMG. It's a little different than the BMW.. while you can move the display up and down, you cannot customize the display. There are just two modes: one view is rev and gear only, and the other view includes navigation.

The Heads Up Display was one of the reasons why the M3 never appealed to me. I got spoiled by it on my E60 M5. Even with the first generation HUD's on my E60 M5, it still gave navigation information on the HUD. I was also able to code the E60 M5 HUD to show turn signals and a couple of other features. After that, there was no way I could drive another high end car without it. Lesser cars like Fords, Fiat, and Subaru I don't mind not having a HUD, because those cars just aren't that caliber anyways. So when the new F80 M3 came out featuring a HUD, I really got to thinking that it was now a car that I wouldn't mind owning.

The new Audi's also have nice HUD's today too. Mercedes is pretty good, but not the same as BMW's. I will always feel that BMW have the best HUD's.

I forgot about not being able to see the HUD well with polarized sunglasses but my reaction was the opposite of yours. I stopped wearing my sunglasses so that I could see the HUD!

I also love the HUD.

For me the most important feature is being able to see the gear I'm in without taking my eye off the road and having to glance at the dash.

When you are driving a conventional manual your "brain" instantly knows the gear based on your hand/gearshifter position. Then when you shift you place it to the gear you want to be in.

With a 7 speed clutchless gear box unless you are completely paying attention with each shift and listening to engine noise (which we really can't hear or what we are hearing is actually coming from the speakers) you tend to loose track of the current gear.

As we know this is important in allot of situations i.e. 90 degree turn under extreme deceleration . Am I in 5th gear and need 3 clicks to get to 2nd gear or was I in 4th gear and only 2 clicks etc

Other example would be the rpm band and its use under extreme acceleration being able to shift at redline

I tend to feel "naked" every time I drive a car without the HUD... funny how quickly you can get attached to little things.

Just picked up the wife's new Escalade - very well done HUD on that vehicle. M-view on my F10 is almost always on. Polarized lenses make it a little difficult to see but it's fine.

First one that I ever saw was in a Citroen (what???) C5 in 2002.
In the ///M5, I thought I wouldn't need it/use it a lot. Now I can't wait to see those yellow bars flashing up when approaching the redline ;-)

I see that some call it Heads Up Display, but isn't it Head Up Display?

I thought "Heads Up" is used as a warning or shout out to someone when there is a danger etc?

HUD was developed pre WWII by the Germans. The first use was in military aircraft and the Royal Navy was the first to employ HUD in the 1958 Buccaneer.

In the '70ies HUD was employed in civil aircrafts.

The 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme was the first production car with HUD.

EDIT:
See that in N America it's called Heads Up Display
