All have models with AWD. None of those cars are fun to drive. They're all useless with their understeer, and can never get the tail going.

Supercars have AWD and RWD. That's so despicable!

Grow up people, and buy whatever AWD or RWD you want. Bitch as much as possible if BMW only gives you 1 option.

I thought I recall something about the current iteration of the x-drive system "disengaging" above ~70mph or something.

people on this forum are dramatic about things. I am glad that BMW is offering AWD as an "option".

I drive my M3 all winter and although it's a little slow getting going, it's fine all year. That being said, my wife has the 535xiT and that is a BLAST to drive in the winter (and summer). I would be the first to welcome the idea of a M5 with x-drive. Summer performance isn't impacted significantly (except to the RWD purists) and the winter gets a whole lot more fun!

Perhaps most of the "brainwashing" is that die-hards that believe RWD cars are the only form of sports car...?

You shouldn't be driving an M5 when it's snowing anyway.

Exactly...if it was RWD. But add in AWD to the equation and why not? I see 911T in the winter as well as GT-R's. So having AWD as an option is actually a great idea. More choices for us. I definately welcome it. Imagine a M3 with AWD. The current M3 is already quite a good car for dd. So imagine the new one with AWD option. That'll be the ultimate dd. And for those purists that live in warm weather all year round, there's still a RWD version. So everybody should be happy.

Then don't get a M car or a sports car, or move...I'm getting tired of Americans (not saying you) acting like spoiled brats who have to always have things their way...I live outside of DC, the weather is nice, you see people with their bikes out, when the weather isn't, no bikes. Simple. When it snows, you don't drive your hi-po M car (unless that is your only car)---and furthermore, I'm and "essential employee", so you really want to talk snow to me?

And another thing, it was said that the ever increasing sloth-ness of the current 5 series can be blamed on what Chinese customers want---keep that in mind...

So true! The best sports cars are AWD (911 Turbo, GTR, Lamborghinis, I could go on and on) and people on this board are brainwashed that RWD is superior!

I can't tell you how many people looked at me like I would get stuck over here when it snowed 27 inches. Granted, getting stuck is easier, but thats something DRIVER SKILL should handle. I didn't get stuck ONCE in my E90. All I have is All-Seasons.

edit: wtf, they say its going to be 4-wheel-drive, and then later say AWD. (yes there is a difference). I'm no longer considering AutoCar fully credible. Its a misguided rookie mistake to call them the same.

I HATE when people tell other people what they should do with their own money, who are you to tell someone NOT to get an M car?

Either way...who cares? THERE WILL BE BOTH PEOPLE....If you live in Cali and want your RWD M5, you will have it. AND if you live in Chicago, and want your AWD M5, then you too will have it your way.

Everyone wins....why are people getting pissed? As long as it is an option and not standard AWD....let it be!

Geez

Agreed.. people just love to complain about change, as if a manufacturer should maintain the same principles for 100 years and then become extinct in doing so because they haven't changed to match what the consumer wants.

This is news to me. Please provide source or explain.

But I have to agree. If you don't like what BMW is doing, move on. Vote with your dollar. I'm sure moves like this by BMW will just make Porsche richer (well, those of us who are affluent enough to afford Porsches).

Seriously?? Just "move", huh? I would move to "outside of DC"... but the US is too damn broke! I'll just stay in Canada where our loonie is higher

If Chinese customers want a "increasingly sloth-ness" 5 series then it is them that vote with their wallet. They are the ones putting money in BMW's purse so why not. Why don't YOU buy a "faster-ness" GS350 instead, Lexusboy.

+1 its just an option.

its funny though because people who say the M brand is ruined will still buy M cars anyway, so is it really ruined?
