The pilots are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association union and a strike must also be authorized by federal mediators.

United and Continental merged in 2010 but the pilots, despite two years of negotiations, are not yet …

Well if you read it, I believe it says now we have a 30-day cooling off period which would allow them to go on strike in mid-August.

Correct but if it causes a disruption in a major industry for America both Congress and the President can order the ALPA back to work. Regardless this poses an issue for the United Customers. I would be one of them!

So I finally got through to United. They said that the so called "strike" is nothing more than a scare tactic. Since the pilots are not on strike they have no protocol for how to handle the "what if" situation of the pilots striking. "We sure dont want to leave our customer's hanging" was the response I got. So if they strike I guess its another airline and hope we get reimbursed.

Interesting. Obviously the call centers are outsourced. I doubt a Union employee would have told you that.

Right. The value of bluffing is diminished when you say "we are bluffing".
