RWD with this much HP? Meh.

I know the purists are going to want to hang me for this, but I think my M5 should be AWD, and wish it was. And let me start by saying I "mostly" love the car.

I come to this conclusion after only a few weeks with her, but there is just too much power coming out of the rear wheels to effectively put it to the ground. Like most of us, I experience wheel spin at every turn, etc. Hit the gas at 40MPH, wheels are spinning all over the place.

For me, this car should be AWD and inspires little confidence as RWD. Yes yes, I know it's supposed to be driven like a man should drive it, but its still a 2 ton luxury sedan that most of us drive on the public road every day.

Why do I think I am going to hear it for this........

I don't agree. The car is fine. Maybe you should have gotten a 550i. I like being faster than most cars on the road and pass cars at will.

... to add to this, I also like being able to kick the tail out at will ...

Plenty of other options out there for the AWD crowd.

If you wanted a car with efficient performance....every once of power making it seemlessly to the tarmac....you should have bought a GT-R, an E63S or RS7. I like knowing that the car can be a beast and that it needs to be respected at all times. You can leave the traction control on and you won't be going sideways...or having fun. Maybe you should look into professional driving instruction if you lack that much confidence in the car. That isn't meant to be an insult, but instead something constructive for you to build the confidence necessary to better exploit the capabilities of the M5.

Wow - some pretty harsh replies. How many miles do you have on the car. Keep in mind it may take a few hundred miles for your tires to be at max traction. That said, just about any time you stomp the go pedal, you will be able to break the rear end loose. But stomping isn't the proper way to drive fast in any event.

Everyone is different... the purist argument for a 6MT has been discussed but this car seems to just be better with DCT... and I have only had manuals my whole life. To each their own. But we shall see... what the future holds in regards to an awd m5

GNALUZU is right, a drivers mod is needed for your F10 M5. However, I still understand your complaint, but I say that you should have maybe realized that traction was going to be a problem with all that torque and RWD before you bought the car. Simple fact is that the E63 AMG-S, CLS63 AMG-S, and RS7 are all easier cars to drive, because of AWD. Kind of like what TomC said of the GTR. Owning a car that is too easy to drive or go fast in gets old for some people, they feel like they aren't having fun anymore. I remember seeing one video with Randy Pobst or was it Carlos Lago driving a GTR on a race track saying how it took such little skill to drive a GTR very fast on the track. That's not fun to a lot of people, but some for some they don't care.

A lot of people love the M5 because it's a pretty well balanced machine and can be very fast on the track or road, but you have to work hard for it. Truth is, I used to drive with my E60 M5 with DSC OFF all the time, even going to get some milk. In my 34,000 miles of ownership of the F10 M5 I've taken DSC OFF only a hand full of times. I believe it takes years to master the kind of performance that the F10 M5 has, because as one BMW M Performance Driving School Instructor once told me, "the F10 M5 is just so much more lethal."

I'm not saying that the Merc's or the RS7 are bad cars, cause really they are quite good for what they are, but the balance and dynamics just aren't there like they are with the BMW. So I say just drive your M5 more and have fun with it, but please keep DSC ON for your sake and everyone else's. I just don't want to see you or your car get hurt. MDM is ok though.

OK OK OK!!!

HAHA. I knew this would get me some attention.

First, Get an Audi or MB over a BMW, no thanks! I am an admitted BMW Fanboy. 14 new BMW's at 42yrs old and more to come. Didn't even consider another marquee.

Next, I didn't say I hate it, nor did I say the car is bad, I just think it would be better with AWD. And I bet the future proves me correct on this. And I stand by what I said; as the 6 speed is not as good as a Double Clutch, IMO, AWD is also better than RWD in MOST (not all) situations when you get north of 400hp. It just makes sense to me unless you enjoy drifting.

PS. I think I will need tires in about 3 months at this rate!

Personally I enjoy it breaking loose. I smile every time. I agree with the above you definitely should go to the BMW performance center driving school. After I went to the school I traded in my 550 for my M5 two weeks later.

YUp car puts down power great only time it gets a little nuts is below 60 degrees trying to go WOT... Anything above 70 I feel like it would be fine well into the 600-700s.

Like others have stated, RS7 or E63 S if you want AWD.

The RS7 is awesome.

This RWD/AWD argument reminds me of the DCT/6MT argument,

For the next generation (G Series) M5, BMW will most likely offer an option for AWD.

The result will be the same as the DCT/6MT situation. The majority of M5 owners choose DCT over 6MT. When the GXX M5 comes out, the majority of M owners will choose RWD over AWD.

AWD will appeal to those living in the NE (and other locations where it snows), and make people that feel the same way as you happy.

By the way, I understand why you don't want to go with an M5 competitor because of it's lack of AWD. Others should understand as well. No other manufacturer sells a performance car that is like the M5.

I find AMG to be the exact opposite of the M5. Porsche is somewhat similar, but not completely. BMW technology (versus Porsche), the design of the M5 (versus a panamara).. there's quite a few reasons..

Get the m5 Man if you don't want to be like me. I am feeling guity and regretting everyday about I got 650GC instead of M5 last summer.
My dealer just told me there will be a frozen black and full black leather limited m5 available in next month. It is one of two in Canada. They made me feel guilty on the Happy Easter Day.
Get the m5 if you want to be a happy driver.
Get the 550, if you want to feel sorry to yourself once you start the engine everyday.
