Turbos need to be replaced @ 11600 miles?
This has to be some type of record! I took my car in for what I thought was a fan belt screeching noise, turned out to be the turbos. Service manager said they are waiting on an answer from BMW NA to replace them.
I only have 11600 miles so now I'm wondering how is it possible for the turbos to go bad after such a short time. Anyone experience similar turbo failures? |

Turbo's spin at very high RPM and need lubrication. If the lubrication isn't sufficient then damage can occur. The other possibility is exhaust too hot from running too lean. So either excessive heat or insufficient lubrication or a combination.

Yeah, most of us have done that. I have the CAI and Dinan Stage 2 so it's probably something with your ECU that has caused the problem. I don't think both would have a random mechanical failure so this must be a systemic issue. Seems like a turbo lubrication problem.

No, I just mean the delivery of the oil to the turbos. If it was reduced or the oil was getting too hot then the turbos wouldn't cool off as much as they need. Do you run the car in sport plus? I usually run mine in sport. I think sport plus wil cause the turbos to be spinning faster most of the time and that means they will be hotter.

Seriously? I don't think so. FWIW my car is always in Sport+, and tank to tank usually average around 14MPG. Car has been driven hard for 28K, as it was designed.
My guess is that they were oil starved for some reason. In fact, there are a few people here who have driven their cars quite hard, with no ill effects. Hopefully you'll get the M back soon...good as new.

Just shy of 40K miles, sport+ >90% of time... no turbo issues and there are probably a lot of others with similar responses waiting in the wings so I don't think it is a high correlation. Agree on lubrication comment. Its a car, things can fail unexpectedly. Enjoy the warranty.

I am sure they designed the car with that possibility in mind but what I think is that if you did have some kind of flow problem with the turbo lubrication, sport plus and hard driving would cause a failure sooner than later. I drive my car hard too, I go out and run quarters from time to time and I have a lead foot. In addition, I have Dinan Stage 2 and I have 17k miles. Anyway, this is why we have a warranty for 50k and why I probably will not have one of these out of warranty.

So I just spoke to the service manager, turns out the turbos definitely need to be replaced and an order was placed today. Now I just have to play the waiting game.
