Nav and speedo issues
Dropped my 2014 M5 off for service today. Car has 2200 miles.
Nav is blinking on and off after car sits in the afternoon sun. Only 65-75 degree days. Not that hot. The speedo reads 7-10% high. I go 80 on the freeway and Civics and Camrys pass me in the slow lane. Also confirmed on radar sign in school zone. Asked them to recalibrate. BMW service guy says it's supposed read high. Told him that's cheating me on mileage if true. He thought the speedometer and odometer were not connected and that although the speedo reads fast the mileage would be correct. Sounds fishy. Said he'd pull the service bulletin on the issue. Anyone heard this before? |

This is true. The speedo reads high by design. BMW programs it to run high to be certain the speedo never reads under the actual speed. There's some formula out there like 3% + 2mph to figure out what the speedo will read given an actual speed. There was another thread recently you can search for that did a deeper dive on this topic.

Thanks for the thread pointer. Didn't read anything about BMW service claiming speedometer and odometer being separate allowing correct mileage with incorrect speed. registering 10% high on 36,000 lease is ~$720. Not a ton of money but still cheating lease people.

Pretty sure that the odometer is not calibrated to the speedo, so you should be fine. Best way to test it would be to reset you trip meter on the highway in between mile markers.

QUOTE] I experienced this yesterday after the car sat in the sun for a few hours and it was no more than 65 degrees. It's at the dealer right now. Should find out more about the problem tomorrow when I check in with them. Other forum members have exerienced it as well.

Quick update... Got my car back yesterday after 10 days.
On the Nav flashing... They replaced the CIC unit but were unable to activate the Nav / maps. Has something to do with the new unit having 2014 SW and code and my old one being a 2013 model. Car goes back in next week for another try. Attached the bulletin explaining speedo tolerances and that the electronic odometer is indeed separate from the speedometer reading. |

Latest... Nav was still flashing after CIC replacement so back to the dealer service to replace the display unit. No flashing after having car back for one day. Now the satellite radio doesn't work. Will be nice once all the kinks are worked out.

I was back at the dealer right after I bought mine for the speedo error. I got the same stupid sheet and indignant attitude from the dealer. Though I like the car, number one and two piss offs for me remain:
1. No real oil dipstick 2. We will have the speedo read erroneously fast to protect you against yourself. There is a certain pervasive arrogance about the company that I just can't overlook. (This is my first BMW.). |

Pretty sure that every speedo reads fast. Not to protect the driver, but to protect the car manufacturer from sue happy individuals.

Let me know if this is about right for your math-filled driving experience (feel free to adjust based on your exact correction..it is the philosophy that is important):
With the knowledge of the incorrect indicated speed, you realize that when you are doing 74 BMW-MPH you are only going 70. As a result you initially shoot for 74 on your drive. Then at some point, perhaps seconds or minutes later (perhaps when you are being passed), you realize if you were in a car that indicated MPH then you would be going over by +5 to +10 anyway. As a result, you increase to 81 or 82 BMW-MPH. At this point you start becoming comfortable with that indicated speed being somewhat high. But then (and perhaps over time) you start getting a bit mentally lazy when the speed limit drops to 55 or 45 on the road you are on. After all, what fun is trying to calculate 105% * 45? This Mental laziness starts tell you that you should just add 10...that is "close enough." Besides, everyone else speeds anyway right? As a result, any effect that the law had intended to accomplish to ensure drivers did not speed (whether willful or accidentally due to an inaccurate gauge) is completely lost by the human desire for accuracy. The correction however, like many things, is an over-correction and then you are pretty much speeding all of the time (and perhaps more so than if the speedo had been accurate to begin with). This philosophical moment brought to you by the letter "M" and the number "5". |

I have a GPS camera detector which is accurate too 0.05%, and my Speedo @ 70MPH is 2 MPH out, below that it's 1-2 MPH out only. On my winter wheels (rears 275/35/20) it's spot on.
