ESS has built some of the fastest BMWs in the industry and continues to carry the tradition with the introduction of their performance software for S63tu powerplant. As Southern California's premier ESS dealer, we were among the first to receive the Stage 1+ software to put to the test on our in-house dynojet to verify results on a completely stock 2013 BMW M5 test subject.

Needless to say, we were very impressed by the results.

ESS T-700 Flash features
- Stage 1 or Stage 1+ configurations
- Bench Flash for FULL ECU control, unlike piggyback controllers
- Optimized Throttle response in Normal, Sport and Sport Plus modes
- Reprogrammed Torque management
- Full OBD2 port access to retain diagnostics/datalogging/critical safety systems
- Top speed/VMAX removal
- 91/93 octane maps
- Removed cat check option for those running Catless downpipes (off-road use only)

Details
Vehicle: 2013 BMW M5
Transmission: DCT
Modifications: Stock (baseline)
Octane: 91 (baseline)

The charcoal filters were quickly tossed and a set of BMC Filters were added once the ECUs were flashed and run back on the dyno to gauge results with a bit of 93 octane added. With a 95whp gain and 109ft-lb. in Torque, the tune did not disappoint! The ESS T-700 Flash offers full control over the factory ECUs without relying on cheap piggyback controllers to manipulate data to trick/fool the DME while keeping full compatibility.

Flashing will be performed at EAS's headquarters in Anaheim, CA shortly. Also, greater results can be expected with a set of catless downpipes and higher octane. Stage 2 software is close to completion and will soon be offered as a package with larger turbos to those with the need for even more power.

Expect to see some quick M5s coming out of our doors soon.

Stay tuned.
I'm surprised nothing was meantioned about the DCT clutch plates not holding up especially in the stage 2. They will absolutely need to be upgraded with a set of Dodson performance plates.

It really depends on how hard you drive the car after you add all of that extra torque. The stock components in the DCT hold up just fine over time if you keep the torque levels at the stock 502lbs/ft, but anything over 600lbs/ft and if you drive the car hard, you will begin to see wear and maybe even failure. Joe@Trinity drives his M6 very hard on a monthly basis and he had to upgrade many components to ensure the DCT holds up over time and maintains its smoothness.

http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1128469

However, even if you modified your car to make 800lbs/ft of torque but only drive the car in city traffic at like 35mph as a daily commuter to work and back with no hard driving on the weekends, you won't run into the same issues as Joe did. So it just depends on how hard you drive the car. I have been running over 600lbs/ft for over a year now with hardly any hard driving and my clutch/DCT have held up for the most part fine with only perhaps a perception that my clutch seemed to engage hard on rare occasion, but even that mostly went away when BMW updated my car with the latest software and some of that code was for making the DCT shift a heck of a lot smoother.

Good point. If you hammer your car on the low end there will be problems.

We've flashed a couple of local M5s and they've been holding up just fine for street use. Those that see track or airstrip use would likely need beefed up internals on the DCT side.

Any foreseen issues with the 6MT handling the additional hp/torque?

Well I always drive my car like it's intended. As you guys know my car had bms and I abused the hell out of it. Great product I may add. Got rid if it and got a tune. I haven't yet reported on it as I've been working A lot. But I can report even though ive still got a couple things to work out, it's still being pushed to 180mph without any problems clutch wise or dtm or cel. And no this isn't a BR TUNE any more and not ESS. When finally finished I'll do a report.

Tom, just curious. With the new DME the way it is there any red flags when you go into BMW for warranty work?

Roman

+1 for red flags on DME.

How will it work for people located overseas. This would be a big hassle to re-send ECU's everytime the dealer updates the software on the DME. I hope remote updating is do-able in the near future.

I had to throw away my catless DP's until a solution is found

Love the power, but the only thing I worry about is motor and turbo reliability; I can't imagine the stock internals taking more of a beating and lasting very long.

I would also like to know if dealers can pick up on the tune when going in for service.

While there is no such thing as an "invisible" tune, the flash is essentially undetectable during normal service and does not interfere with diagnostic equipment. This keeps service technicians happy, because they can do their job quickly and efficiently.

We are now flashing in-house, same day turnaround in most cases.

Same answer for all the software flash questions...
If the software level is changed and you receive a software update from BMW or if you get a "check engine" light and the repair includes a DME update which is very possible at some point, your performance tune will be over written.

If the new I-Level calls for the DME to be updated, we can simply flash again once the service appointment is completed. Not a problem at all.

We can even perform full software updates in-house.

We recently tuned a F15 X5 xDrive50i and it feels like an M5 pulling on the highway - night and day difference. Since the dynojet is 2WD, we're unable to share any numbers.

Would love to see more 7s on the dyno. Let me know if you have any questions beforehand or drop by our facility to meet in person.
