DINAN M5 ECU Tune (?)

Apparently DINAN has made progress with the ECU. Looking like they cracked the encryption, have been doing R&D, and will release it to market soon (soon aka on DINAN Standard Time). Who knows when it will actually be released.

I took some notes listening to the podcast...

PodCast: The Smoking Tire
Episode: Krautwerk
Time Mark: 16:50 (16m50s)

DINAN Parts: S/W, Intake, Exhaust, and High Flow Cats

Bolt-On Parts Produce: 670hp (flywhl)

Software Modifications:
- Waste Gate Control
- Ignition Timing
- Fuel Adjustments
- Sensors

Warranty: 40,000-50,000 Miles

DINAN Test Car: 125,000 Miles

Other DINAN M5 Parts Mentioned:
- Coil Overs For Electronic Shocks

M5 Custom Engine:
- Low Compression Engine
- Larger Turbos
- Produces 750-800hp

DINAN's Wheel/Tire Setup:
Front: 285 9.5
Rear: 305 10.5

Optimal Power M5 Can Handle:
M5 can handle 650 ft/lb torque
Gearbox and traction is good for 600 ft/lb - they tune to hold that throughout the rev band.. makes car very fast.

Interesting information. This does hold some merit for me now because we are slowly but surely starting to see some Performance Parts come out of Dinan. Like their wheels and their new Sway Bars (which look awesome BTW). So I just going to take a guess and say that over the next 3 years we should see these things come out from Dinan one at a time or something. Dinan does make some good stuff but it is definitely overpriced. We'll see what the future holds.

Agreed but what's the cost of a transmission that blows when someone jacks the boost way up and does not adjust other parameters ? The high price comes with peace of mind. At least that's how I will tell it to my wifey =p

I remember when that independent tuner in Atlanta, Performing Imports, was offering the Press Tune for $5,000 dollars and some people were paying that. I can only imagine the ridiculousness that will ensue once Dinan releases their tune. I'm just going to sit back and watch the show.

Listened to the Podcast. Very interesting!

He didn't go into any details on the M5 tune though... All the software things he mention can be done by means of a piggyback. But if they indeed have managed to break the encryption that would be awesome!

I agree that he did not go in to details but he stated his opinion of piggybacks and why they can't accomplish what needs to happen because the amount of sensors in the system that have to be fooled.

Been working fine for 335i's (buddy locally put 88k doing that, and while things like spark plugs, intake cleaning, etc need to be done more, cars running as strong today as it was when it first got put on) running double the hp + meth and e85...

It won't matter who does it, what matters is how well these things are built.

In the 335 piggybacks they at least had control over fueling and timing . That's acceptable. Just tricking the ECU to do mega boost is not IMHO and someone will push that approach too far and have a new 335 priced repair bill .

I think the sweet spot for the current piggybacks is 3psi on pump gas and 5psi on race gas. Switzer, BMS, and all the other piggyback tuners I know of are running these levels for some time now and I've yet to hear of any damage.

To take it to the next level I think a new generation of CAN based piggybacks will be required. Or methanol injection.

On repairs whether you agree with it or not likely if someone blew a motor they would just remove the after market parts and warranty it. As the piggybacks leave no trace left behind once removed. But I checked getbmwparts.com and a rmfd short block from BMW is "only" $18k + labor which would be an expensive way to repair it. More likely you'd just do a rebuild, replace the faulty piston with a new OEM one, rebalance, etc, and be looking at less than $10k out the door. I understand some of you guys pay almost that for your exhaust systems, lol.

Are you telling me that BMW will not be able to detect that there were increased boost levels? I find that hard to believe since they can track just about everything else. For example, many of the E60 tunes increased the max rpms. If you were to blow your engine and then remove the tune, BMW could still detect the fact that the rev limit had been exceeded, when and how may times.
