Help with Selling M5

Guys- I need some opinions on how to sell my car. I have quite a bit into it and I wanted to avoid stripping it down to stock and having to piece it out. It looks like that is the best option, but most of the stock parts are 1500 miles away in my storage.

How much do you think is a reasonable private party asking price with everything on it?

2013 M5 w/ 18,000 miles
Alpine White w/ Sakhir Orange Interior
Paint is currently Raail Vinyl Paint, Satin White Pearl
RKP Carbon front lip, rear diffuser, BMW cf spoiler
IND cosmetic package all around
Gloss black painted roof
21" ADV.1 5.2s wheels
Michellin Pilot Super Sports
GruppeM intake
Akrapovic Exhaust
AMS Downpipes
KW Adjustable Sleeve Kit

Dan, your in Austin and I'm in Dallas. I suggest we swap my stock parts for all your mods and then sell your car. Hahaha

Beautiful Car!!! Love the white and SO. Don't see that combo too often and very tasteful mods. I am looking for mods for my 13 M5

From my experience with modded cars, unless you can find an enthusiast that sees value in the mods and doesn't mind spending 5-10 more above value, it will be tough to recoup any costs on mods. I have been told many times over that a stock car will sell quicker and for more than a modded car. Sounds stupid to me because I would jump on yours over a stock car anytime but there are always concerns about modded vehicles.

Do you have a price in mind already?

My advice. Return to stock as much as possible and sell off the parts or post your car as is on eBay/forums and hope to get an enthusiast that wants those mods and will spend the extra money for it.

Well I traded mine in Dec to BMW Austin with similar mileage. They gave me $61k then gave me back the intake and downpipes which I sold to another board member for $3750 and recently sold the sock mufflers for $500. So my total amount for the car was $65,250 but I got a really good deal on a Range Rover Sport SC in trade that BMW wanted to get rid of. They gave me the car for $49k so I ended up getting cash back. The same model and year RR is just now asking $49k at RR dealerships.

Thanks for the advice, I may take you up on that offer to swap parts plus $. As a matter of fact my guy who did most of the work is based in dallas anyways and that is where the car is going for "deconstruction".

I think that's reasonable with what you have.

Looks like it's a win/win for both of us if we can work something out. I have a 13 M5

Selling modded cars to a dealership

The reason modded cars are typically worth less is due to support issues. Dealers are typically fully qualified to support standard cars and there are escalation routes back to the factory in the event they can't repair something. Once you start modding however all bets are off. All the factory will say is, "put it back to standard, then call us".

I had a situation where I had a difficult to diagnose emissions control problem on a Z4M and they were convinced the car was mapped....it wasn't. There initial solution was to return the car to standard then start diagnosis.

As soon as you start fooling around with exhausts and inlets, you get potential mixture, ignition and emission issues which a dealer simply can't deal with. ECU remapping is even worse

Also you see a lot of older cars being modded.....a symptom of less well heeled owners avoiding paying full price for BMW parts and fitting cheaper aftermarket alternatives. Whenever I see a car with aftermarket wheels, that's always the conclusion I jump to. Standard wheels damaged, replaced with cheaper aftermarket units. ECU remaps generally indicate that a car has been driven exceptionally hard....drag raced maybe and could face expensive repairs.

I learned my lesson buying 'modded' motorcycles. Bought 2 and each was a lemon that was quickly returned.

Just sold my 2013 delivered in 2012 for 55k. SO, 20" wheels, full leather, and hud. Purchased ED 91k with 3k cash from BMW for late delivery due to fuel pump. Dealer put new tires, and CPO so they're in the car for around 64k easy trying to sell for 67k. Still on the lot. My buddy at the dealer said they loose money on all M5 resales due to most owners want a new one, and too pricey for used car market. I got out of it because next year the resale would have been far worse. Good luck selling.

Hmm. We both buy at the same store, but I think the dealer is into the car for around 60-61k and trying to sell it for 67k. They hope to drop it to 63k and get a sale....

I bought the car in Michigan, and drove it to ATL because of the deal I got in MI and I have family there. Easy way to break in the car from the drive after ED, but I did sell the car in ATL.

Put mine back to stock (except springs and IND cosmetics) last Aug before I got my 30Jahre. Similar mileage. Msrp was $108k and I got $64 dealer offered me $59k almost a year ago. (In SF Bay Area)
Sell your wheels and exhaust as they are cheap to swap as that will get you the most in total for your car in my opinion.
BMW killed the '13's with the CP and idrive upgrades on the '14's on.
