Best 0-60 tune times

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I've recently installed the P3Cars / Turner motorsports vent gauge. Cool toy. It can auto measure 0-60 times. Without much effort at all I ripped off multiple 3.80 times today. My car is stock with stock PSS tires. Pretty impressive if you ask me. Not even using launch control. Just S3 MDM.

What are some owners out there running tunes producing for 0-60 times? I would think 3.2-3.3 should be very realistic.

Guess I never thought about doing that. This guy here in Ashdod Israel has a m5. I'm gonna ask him to try it after work.

I got my P3Car just last week. I am configured to kph and my first run was 4.16 to 100kph. Thats was in full lazy mode and just nailed the accelerator and bang 4.16, looking forward to a few more runs with different settings ;-)

Question, with your P3car meter, when I select air inlet temperature the returned values jump around quite a bit, is it the same for you?

Cheers Craig

I highly doubt that any tuned M5 is going to see a 3.2-3.3 without slapping on some drag radials or wider rubber. The additional torque is only going to make it that much harder to launch. Sure the extra power is going to help as speed builds but any additional wheelspin is going to have a more significant impact in negating that top end acceleration. I really think that 0-60mph times are fairly meaningless in measuring high performance cars today. A 60-130mph time takes traction out of the equation (for the most part) and gives a better indication of performance/power.

Agreed, but that's what throttle modulation is for. I still think 0-60 is fun

Yeah just stomping it with S3 or leaving it in D typical yields 4.x sec results. You really need to modulate throttle to get a solid time.

Rob my best time so far has been 3.76 with switzer tune but the wheel spin and not having much thread left is killing me

yeah I think low 3's will be hard as Tom said without proper tires and a 100% lock up diff. The active diff while be very dynamic is not perfect from launches.

Two questions on this topic:

1) I ran into three people (one of which claimed to have worked for BMW NA) that said that the actual power output on the stock M5 F10 can easily be north of 600hp. True?

2) It sounds logic that, at 0-60 tests, the initial torque and grip balance decides on the best time. I haven't been playing around much with launch control yet. But with all this said, wouldn't it make sense to manually adjust the launch control initial RPM down a bit. The standard 3000 rpm always makes the wheels spin at launch control. It is my understanding that finding the exact power-torque point where wheels barely spin and grip kicks in as soon as possible would be ideal for fastest 0-60 times.

Thoughts?

Hi Craig. Did you manage to get the gauge in an air vent for the right hand side of the car ?

Thanks

David

Hi David

No, I ordered the kit for righthand drive without the vent. I installed it myself into my vent via P3car DIY. Pretty straighforward, the whole exercise took about 45mins.

Cheers

I was going to, but looks like Turner adds some cool features, such as the 0-60 timer.

Agreed 100%. The inability to "launch" my car constantly has me stopping by Porsche dealers and driving the 997 Turbo cars. Very close to just saying the heck with it and pulling the switch. My wife's M6 convertible launches better. Still not well. Very frustrating. The F10 M5 is such fun once rolling but I just love the feeling of letting a car peel it's paint off from a start.

Let me know when you get this figured out. The PITA nature of LC on the F10 is just too much for me to get frustrated with. I am not a casual sort of driver either. I am very much a car guy and consider myself to be pretty adept with most cars and driving but I just can't get consistency out of the F10 LC. Love my car but the inability to put all the power down is starting to get old. Never had this problem in any other car. Not due to torque but rather inconsistency and complicated operation. Most times it just roasts tires. Really can't get the dialing in of the RPMs down. Car likes to slip out of LC mode when I try. Would hate to line up against any car and have to rely on the LC. Looking forward the the release of the new Porsche 991 Turbo in Dec. Not sure if can deal with this much longer. I drove a nice 2012 Turbo S today and it launched so hard it would smoke my F10. Sad part is that I found my F10 as fast and just as exciting once in 2nd and on the highway. Seems to spool up the turbos faster and take off a little stronger when you stomp on it. Ugh....
