So confused..... (possible purchase)

First a little background.... long time M owner. Have owned 3, yes 3 E39 M5's, 2 E60 M5's and 2 E46 M 3's and a 2001 740i M Sport circa 2001. Currently drive a X5M. Love the heritage, value proposition, etc.

Last year I added a 911 997 Turbo in addition to the X5M. After 10 months of ownership, my wife and I split for a little and I sold the Turbo as I was living in the city for almost a year. Wife and I worked thru our issues and I'm happy to report we are better than ever!!

Now its time to address the car situation. Have had the X5M for almost 2 years. New body coming. Warranty almost up, and time to scratch the itch. Nothing wrong with the car and still really enjoy driving it.

I seriously considered the 997 TT again but the 2007-2008's NAV is really old, the 09' are overpriced and I want to get back into the track scene. The TT would need a suspension overhaul to haul to make this happen and prefer a more linear experience. GT3 not an option as too stiff for any daily duty (at least for me). So I did a PPI on a beautiful 2007 TT, but after CPO, shipping, etc. I was well over 90K. It was an expensive Turbo, but perfect options. Just couldnt do it. something holding me back. Price, age of car, new body? Dont really know but called off the deal.

So then I went to the P dealer to check out the new C4S. Bottom line is great car, has PDCC (chasis control), sport exhaust, all the performance goodies. 2 year lease deal approx $150 more than M5 for a 7500 mile per year 2 year lease. Great choice, great car. Was ready to buy it. Beat on the car for 2 years. Work, track, etc. 2 years will fly by. Then the wife says "dont you want to check out the M5?" Sure, why not. No way this will change my opinion of getting the P car.......

WHOA!!!! Totally blown away. Luxury, power, style..... WHOA! And being a long time BMW owner I cannot stop thiking of the car. Wife and I go to Boston a lot and im dreaming of driving this car to bean town 15x per year. Can totally see myself with this car. Loal dealers willing to sell around invoice plus loyalty, plus 1500 incentive, plus 700 app credit.... payment much lower than expected.

So the dilema is how do I get the daily car that fits my needs, which includes winter in the NE, track warrior, etc. There are possible senarios running thru my mind. I will have 2 cars as the track car needs to be a 2 door coupe. Not going to track the M5. I'm talking 15+ track days per year.... not really suited for the M5. Also the track car will get a lot of work as DD as well, co-DD if you will do it will not be a dedicated trasck car. Needs to fo both...... well.

So options as follows:

1) Keep the X5M til Nov when warranty expires and add the C4S (or C2S) for track/co-dd duty. M5 can wait. Especially with LCI coming.
2) New M5 and older (2009-2011) C4S P car for track. Winter tires on one or both for winter..... is that sufficient?
3) Preowned Panamera (oh yeah forgot to add that part. Local dealer has a nice 4S, or look for Panny turbo) then get a nice late model M3/P car for track. Panny option a good option due to AWD.
4) 550i XDrive M Sport plus dinan with dynamic handling for winter dayd and new C4S Pcar. M5 overkill and 550 is enough especially with P car...

Other options? No kids but def could be kids in the next 2-3 years. Wife mentioned time to get going as I'm old (39)!

Can't sleep...... HELP!

As a side note, I am blessed to have this issue and grateful for that.

Good delima...... But how are you not looking at the M6.....Track,daily,luxury,sporty....
Do you need the extra doors? I know I got the M5 because I have two kids (one being in a car seat) if not I would have looked at the M6.... My dad has the M6, its slightly more expensive but pretty close.

Scratch panny option. Got one as a loaner while cayenne $ was in service, not impressed (too cramped for my taste, maybe m5 spoiled me). Having an suv is convenient and comfy for winter/dd. M5 for track car sounds good, but p car may have the edge (lighter weight, handling, steering). Can't go wrong with X5M and either M5 or Pcar. Gl. Sounds like serious dilemma.

Really tough situation - I had a P car (Targa4S 2010) for 2 years as my DD. I loved everything about it and miss it dearly - some days I wish I kept it and added the M5. However with the new C4S out and the upcoming GT3 I am once again considering adding a P car to the stable - the 991 is spectacular. They are different cars designed for totally difference purposes and I would hate to you see you trying to cram all your needs into one because it won't happen. If we didn't have a kid and I didn't think my wife was going to be taking the SUV I would have gotten another 911. But reality has struck and there are days I need a trunk, fit 4, under the radar; nothing beats the M5 in all those regards. Its a super fast luxury aircraft with killer tech.

GL, really tough decision!!

Im not biased at all, get an M5 And small 4wd car for track duty and winter mode. Maybe a TT-RS? Evo?

You do have a tough choice and I can somewhat relate to it since I was in a similar situation 3 months ago. I too have a X5M and considered selling it to get a M5, GTR, or a used 911 Turbo. I was leaning towards the M5 but then my wife wanted me to keep the X5M since she loved the utility aspect and also thought about the future in which kids would be around within 2-3 years. That being said, I then narrowed it down to the GTR and the Porsche. Leaned towards the GTR since I wanted a new vehicle, however, after looking around, trolling the forums, the wife decided she didn't like it. What killed it was the interior. Nothing against the GTR since it is an awesome car, but I too wanted something a little more appealing in the interior. We stopped by the BMW dealership to test drive the M5 and I was blown away with how great the car was and also provided the luxury aspect to our needs. At the end of the day, I decided to go for an M5 since 1) always been a BMW fan 2) IMO the best 4 dr sedan out there 3) the 4 year maintenance warranty 4) purchased the car under invoice after all the incentives and 5) happy wife equals happy life. Good luck in your decision as you can't go wrong with any.

Hey Alex,

Never a big fan of the M6. Always preferred the M5. IMO the M6 is not a great track car. Too heavy. If I had to choose I would take the M5 over the M6 all day. I don't need the 4 doors but they will come in handy at times.

If you want a track car get the Porsche 911 or even better a Nissan GTR.

If you want a daily driver, the M5 would be my choice. But if you want AWD and don't need M5 level of performance the consider an Audi S6 or RS7. I would skip the Panny 4S.

^ beauty! Love white.

@ stealth - need (want) a daily plus track car that can be used as daily....does anyone really "need" M5 level of permformance? But you make a good point. Giving serious consideration to the 550i X drive for the DD to replace the X5M as it's time to upgrade the electronics aspect..... although it seems some new model BMW owners says the NAV is terrible.... have not had any problems with this in my X5.
