in my M3, there was a noticeable surge when going from normal to sport and then again to sport +.
Your engine setting (Driving Dynamic Control) define the engine response when you press the accelerator pedal. in sport+ mode engine respond faster.
the transmission setting (Drivelogic) sets the transmission shift point/response.
in Drive mode, D1,D2,D3 define the shift point; however in sequential mode S1,S2,S3 define how fast transmission change the gears. when you are driving in D1 and running at 60 mph, 5th gear and activate the M1 bottom (I consider your M1 bottom has something like D2 or D3) in fact you change the transmission setting and then transmission changes the gear to 4 or 3. you see the higher RPM or the surge you referred to. when you are running in your M1 mode and probably your M2 has the same drivelogic set to, there is no change to be considered when you switch to M2.
You can experience the difference between S1, S2 and S3 by changing the gear to see how fast the DCT change the gear in S3 and a little delay in S2 and slower in S1

If you can notice 15 BHP decrease on any 500+BHP going above 5500 RPM I would eat it.
Tyres and all.

FYI. I have only conducted these tests when using S mode and paddles, not in D mode... So always stayed in the same gear when pressing m buttons. So above not entirely relevant...

Honestly, it is probably just a function of expectations vs. reality. It is similar to going to a movie or show that everyone has been raving about. It never seems to be as good. Your mind enhances the memory of those three days as you wait (im)patiently for the car to be delivered.
On the contrary the only way the engine will reach peak HP is if it is broken in by PKILLA gangster style. The problem is he won't be interested in helping you unless you have a an oreo interior with cocaine white seats.

Congrats on the new M5. Yes, the BMW technician at Sytner, in Essex , told me that he did a software update during my break-in service that released full power. I didn't bring up the topic either, he mentioned it to me, so it must be true.

Which BMW dealership are you having your car serviced at? It might the same guy!

It may be different on your side of the pond. Can you please post a copy of your service record. it will show what they did and what software update was performed. Mine only listed the fluids change.

The service record doesn't show any specifics about the software update. It was done as part of the running-in service. Crappy quality iPad photo attached

Thanks mate. I wish I had used Sytner... I use Elms. My guy told me there is no such software update and the service is fluids and filter. These are his comments...
"M5 running inspection £360 inc vat. Engine oil & filter and diff oil.
Oil used is Castrol slx fully synthetic 0/30
Car is on full power from factory & has Castrol slx in it from factory.
Disable break-in service alert
Extra power after 1200 is on m3, not M5."

Perhaps when they Disable break-in service alert, that is the trigger for unlocking launch control and 'full' power???

Did you notice a difference after your service?

Damo,
You will not experience another sure when hitting M2 with sport+ setting. Sport+ is the same as sport, only with DSC threshold lightened a little, so no extra kick. It is not any more boost you are feeling, it is the throttle sensitivity that gives you the kick.

The ONE thing I am sure of is that the service department lists every single thing they do. I am still quite certain that this is a fluids change only.

Maybe the "software update" is simply changing the data parameter "running-in service completed" from false to true. We know that at least that one parameter is updated during the running in service and that parameter may well be used by the ECU for other purposes, like limiting max power. I am SURE of what my BMW technician (and he is the most senior technician at this large dealership) told me about power being limited before the running in service. Why would he make up this story if it wasn't true?
