Warm-up time

Hi guys, I just bought my f10 lci m5. I've been driving it for the past 2 days and it seems to me it takes too long to warm up. The previous NA v8 I had warmed up a lot faster. Also, once it gets warm it doesn't exceed the first quarter of the temp gauge. Is all that normal? Thanks.

I assume you already know but the temp gauge is oil temperature. Mine rarely goes over a quarter, sometimes a tad more when in efficient mode, as the thermostat in the sump opens later.

If you push the car for extended periods at lower than freeway speeds like winding backroads the temp gauge definitely gets pretty close to straight up.

it takes longer than your naturally aspirated because it has so many heat exchanges fighting climbing heat

I think 7-10 easy miles is a good warmup rule when its ~50°F out .. i personally keep it under 3500rpm until then. and even when its warmer out and the guage warms earlier i follow the same mile rule with other components in mind
(launch control requires 6 miles)

The 1/4 tick is 205°F mine never exceeds 210° unless its hot out and im stopped for a few itll creep up a little but it likes to stay about 190°

with under 90°F weather after 100 miles of spirited driving it'll be at 180° and lower and more consistent than after 20-40 mile trips

im constantly fighting heat by not running the a/c
and letting it coast in neutral

Also, bmw foreman told me it will do the turbos good to let the car sit at idle for a few minutes after you get home before you cut it off because that will cool the turbos down like you always used to have to do with turbos but it will also save the fans that BMW has to do the cooling after shut off so you don't fry your turbos because most all ppl arent going to cool their car down before shutting it off

but you can , and I do .. and I try to coast in the last few miles to my house

I always like to hear the fans barely on when I cut the car off because that's how i know i got the car at a good shut off temp and they'll only stay on for maybe a minute ..

if you don't cool your car down they turn on full blast loud as hell and be on for 5-10 minutes

Thanks for the long reply. So, mine gets to normal operating temperature after about 10 miles of easy driving, not exceeding 2k rpm. Would you guys say that's normal?

Scratch that. My actual commute to work is about 9 miles. Today the oil temperature has barely risen. I'd say it was something like 170F. Outside temperature about 50F. This can't be right, can it?

It takes me a solid 8-12 min of easy driving before I'm at the 160 mark or 1/4 oil temp. My last 535i took half the time. I'd say your good. It was one of the first things I noticed as well was how long it took to warm up

Isn't a quarter oil temperature about 210F?

If the f10 had a coolant temp gauge it would rise very quickly to around 100°c, oil takes much longer. Your car is 100% normal as mine takes the same amount of time.

It's good to see that it's taking this long as it appears you're taking it easy on the car while cold. If you were giving any grief it would warm up very quickly.

@BeachM5nster I read all your post, was telling @AddyDaddy. Thank you all for the replys. Just so I don't open another thread, I noticed when I shift into reverse there's a metallic clunck. Can that be a problem with the driveshaft or differential?

Depends how loud the clunk is.It shouldn't happen when at normal temp though..on start up when cold you can get the odd thunk when you come of the P and put it in R.I find it's best to engage D first then into R after warming up about 3 mins.

I'll add to the numerous replies that your car appears to be warming up just fine for the time and conditions described. Keep in mind that the gauge will have some amount of damping. If you want to see actual temp, you need to access the "secret" menu and then pull up the temps. You can then watch the actual degree number increase. Maybe it's worth watching once just to put your mind at ease. It's good that you're sensitive to watching things like that, but don't over think it either. :-)

Regarding your second question, I would post a new thread as people might not click on this one that otherwise might be able to help.

Your car will warm up faster in Efficient throttle mode when driving than in sport or sport plus. In sport and sport plus the DME provides more engine cooling in anticipation of high output operation. Thus it takes longer to "warm up" especially in the winter time.

I once in a while hear a clump first thing in the morning "once in a while" as in maybe I put the car down hot after aggressive driving the night before. Only heard it a couple times in past 3 months.
