M5 or X5M
I honestly haven't test driven a f10 M5 yet but dislike the softness and numb steering of my wife's f10 m-sport 535i compared to our old e92 335i and e90 m3. I've even considered an x5m (which I have driven) in order to get the TTV8 with the "old" BMW feel. Can anyone comment on the drive of a 535i vs m5? Engine/acceleration aside of course.

I don't have an M5 but do have an X5M and a M6 on order. I've driven the F10 M5 on an extended trip in Germany and the two cars are like chalk and cheese. Other than the shared basic mongo motor, one is an overweight 4-door sedan and the other is an uber overweight SUV/truck
If I had to choose between an M5 and the X5M I'd pick the M5...but since I have a 6-speed (7speed?) MT M6 coming the X5M truck offers a little diversity. The X5M has the Dinan tune so it may be as quick straight line as an M5 until drag takes over North of 100 mph, but even with the X5M's trick suspension and high center of gravity it won't stay with a well-driven M5 on the twisties. 610 HP + 575 ft-lbs of torque + AWD + launch control = a lot of fun

I have driven both. Unless you have a need for a truck, go with the F10 M5. I have also driven the F10 550. The steering from the 550 to the M5 is different, the M5 being tighter (adjustable). If you put the M5 in all comfort mode it may be close but slightly better than the 550.
If you put it in all sport mode, steering is vastly improved over the 550. The F10 M5 is the FIRST M CAR that IMO is able to go from a "feels like a 7er" car to a "this is a beast M5" car. What I mean by this is in all comfort you feel like your driving a real luxury car (ex 7er). Then in all sport it literally transforms.

The M5 blows it away in terms of handling, grip, stability, steering feel, and a general taste for blood.

I wouldn't doubt for a second that the M5 would murder an X5M on a track and/or in max steering grip/slalom speed. That being said, I enjoy how the older BMW's drive because they seem to be less insulated from the road and provide a greater sense of rawness - sound, ride harshness, tire noise, steering feel. Purely personal preference as I recognize that the newer f10's are extremely refined.
I'll have to go for a test drive to see. Last edited by E90076; 05-04-2013 at 02:09 PM.. Reason: Edit |

My wife drives a 2012 F10 535i M Sport that I drive quite a bit. I drive a 2013 F10 M5. The 535i M Sport is a very nice car but it is not close to the M5, in any way.

Totally agreed, my 550i M Sport was not in the same "Ball Park" to the M5.

Yep, but both are porkers. The X5M is going to Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch next month along with the M12 GTO-3R for a little fun. I'm sure there will be a few F10 M5's there too; the lap time comparisons between the F10's and my 610 HP X will be enlightening...if it doesn't tip over

X5M if you want to fill up every 180-200 miles on a tank. It goes by pretty quick. The brake dust is super annoying and it's such a big vehicle to wash. Other than that I like sitting up higher, AWD traction, and smoking other cars with it.
M5 for the win.

DMC126, I was in Hershey PA this weekend for 13u baseball, and one of the other parents had an 2012 535i m-sport. I asked him if he liked it, and he did and didn't. Absolutely no soul, but very smooth. He also mentioned that he has had at least 15 flat tires with the m-sport tires. 15!!!!!! Any pothole guaranteed flat tire. Are you experiencing the same thing? Are these m-sport tires problematic?

I loved the traction and security of the AWD when I was pissin' around with the X5M. And the seating position was perfect, had I keep my X5M longer I would have lowered it and I imagine it would have been perfect-er. The M5 is just a bit low for me, but I am getting used to it more every day. I do really miss the spaciousness of the X5 interior. I loved the room of the driver's position. Main gripe of the X5M, I had the standard seats, couldn't order the contour seats when I got mine. The long distance trips were hell on my back, that's mostly why I got rid of mine. For everyday fun it is no contest... M5, and I loved my X5M.

I own both X5 M and M5.... there is no comparison between the 2.
I bought the X5M "hoping" I would be happy after owning 2 E60 M5's. That lasted about 4 months.... And then I couldn't help it and bought an M5. Fiancι now drives the X5M. She loves it but it really lacks the sporty feeling of the M5. |

I currently own both as well and like everyone said 2 totally different cars. If I had to pick one I would pick the M5 of course. More exciting to drive and love the RWD. If I had kids and needed more utility/space I would pick the X5 M. Kept both the X5 M since my wife wanted to have an SUV and why not have the fastest SUV right.
