2014 BMW M5 Review - TEST/DRIVE
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I didn't realize Matt was the lazy type. He didn't take the time needed to learn about the car functions before coming to incorrect conclusions (DCT Start/Stop). |

i was about to post this video here. overall got good feedback, but got annoyed at the things he messed up on. DCT not good? chuckled at that one. how did tech get a 2 from the overall score? nav didn't work for HIM...everyone has different experiences. it's not like any nav system is easy to work with you have to play around with it to get it right. f30 chassis if you are going to quote a spec like that just get it right. like i said overall i think it was a good review he just messed up on some minor things almost as if he had to be picky.

You aren't missing a thing.
My guess is DRIVE took it down to re-edit it because the reviewer's knowledge gaps reflected so poorly on the reviewer (and DRIVE). The tweet from DRIVE this morning with the video has been deleted. No clue. He lost me when he called it an F30. I'm not a fan of Matt's reviews in general. They sound too much like what I'd hear one of my friends say about a car if I made them do a review of something they weren't that interested in. That said, I realize reviewers sometimes get assigned cars to review with almost little or no prep time, but that means STAY AWAY from specifics because otherwise you spit out things like "F30" and the DCT being clunky or jerky around town which even reviewers critical of the M5 will tell you is complete nonsense. All that coupled with contradicting himself in a number of places probably means that the video is getting an edit bay review or being scrapped altogether. DRIVE has a pretty good reputation they need to maintain. When I saw that video I thought that it wasn't at all up to the normal DRIVE standards. Visually yes. Commentary? No way. I could just imagine Chris Harris screaming "This guy doesn't have a clue what he's talking about!" Last edited by TonySCV; 02-07-2014 at 05:50 PM.. |

Anybody else notice how the overall score went from 69% (top of Average) to 80% (firmly in Highly Recommended)? I guess /Drive didn't want to deal with the flack of criticizing the F10 M5.

This is why you don't watch or read these things. Drive the cars your thinking about and make up your own mind.
I am no praiser, but have to say I'm not sure what better system there is than iDrive. COMAND is not, and Audi is a big fail IMO. Everyone (mapping providers) has the same issues until they are fixed by crowd sourcing data. For example my E60 M5 wanted me to take every off ramp and on ramp I passed on the NJTP. No issue in the F10 M5.

Although I much prefer Chris Harris on DRIVE, he wasn't actually being that critical about it. I mean, there was a few negatives that he pointed out. Things that some might like, some may not.
I am not a huge fan of the navi and know of more intuitive systems when it comes to putting in a destination. You kind of have to adapt to it and learn to like it. Just remember how Top Gear ridiculed iDrive when it first came... It takes a bit getting used to, but is SO great when you are used to it's functions. So, as a BMW owner we might not get his negativity, but to non-BMW owners I kinda get it. His gripe with the DCT was with the start stop, not sure if he by that meant start stop traffic or the start stop function? If it was the latter, sure that is annoying... He also didn't feel the M5 had a sound signature. There have been plenty of comments on sound here as well. Some like it, some prefer the AMG V8 sound. The M5 has a V8, but doesn't sound like a V8. It sounds more like a race car because of it's cross bank exhaust manifold. Good thing in my book Apart from that he praised the car. Didn't feel it had become to heavy, was better than an AMG or Audi. Looked better than a Panamera. Still was the top car in it's class. Basically a positive review, but with some (IMHO) minor negatives. But, somehow I have problems taking him as a serious car journalist on the same level as a Chris Harris... I don't know if it's his appearance or the way he talks. But he comes across as not looking like a professional at his work. |

I think it was the later and I note that it can be easily turned off. I turned it off in the delivery bay of the dealership and it has been that way since.

Why are people still reviewing this car? Couple years late to the party.

Seriously, if you can't figure out how to input destinations in the iDrive you've got problems.

Ok, so I finally just watched the video.
It's funny because I've met Matt Farrah before and have even gone on rally's with him. For example, I was on the rally with him when he drove the F12 M6 Vert to Vegas. He had nothing but good things to say about that car. This was in the summer of 2012, when the F10 M5's weren't even available in the U.S. yet. He's a pretty knowledgeable guy when it comes to high performance cars. I'm not entirely sure, that we he's saying in the video directly corresponds to what he really believes. So I find it confusing when he talks about the iDrive and the start/stop of the DCT, which I assume he means the A.S.S. system. I did like what he was saying about the F10 M5 being more of a sleeper as compared to the F06 M6 Gran Coupe. Overall, I found the videography and the music in the video the most appealing to me and not what he actually had to say about the car. You have to admit, they got some very beautiful shots of the M5 on the track on the warm sunny Californian day. Makes me miss SoCal even more. The video also makes me want to dump my current Triple Black M5 and get a Monte Carlo blue instead. Lol! In the end, I've always enjoyed Matt and his Drive videos, but unfortunately, I think that if he had our good friend pkilla review the car instead, it might have been better for this one time.

And a rather irrelevant review since Chris Harris reviewed this platform back in 2012 right on the heels of the outgoing E60. I've never been overly impressed with his ability to review cars; many of his reviews come off as an attempt at humor. At least he has fun and is mildly entertaining, though juvenile. By comparison, Jonny Lieberman makes Matt look polished and objective. Both make me question the necessary criteria required to review cars online.
