M5 vs 235M vs M6 Vert vs M6 GC track day

Yesterday I had a chance to drive all four of the mentioned cars on a short autocross track. Now mind you, my M5 is still being broken in and I haven't had a fair chance to really get on it so my short review is really unbiased. We kept traction on left the tranny in auto mode with Sport mod on.

Both the M5 and M6GC had tons of power and never hesitated coming out of corners and the competition brake system were amazing at proving last minute stopping power at the last minute going into a turn. I was really impressed and the car didn't feel heavy at all.

I then had a chance to jump in the M6 Vert and I instantly felt that the chassis wasn't as stiff and was more forgiving going into turns and handling coming out of them. The powerful motor definitely compensated for that, but I felt almost disconnected from the road and traction control was going off almost all the time (it had to do with my driving most likely-novice at autocross).

Then I finally had my turn with the 235M. When I got situated inside, the car is small and felt right. Obviously the engine is not in the same league as the M cars and it didn't have DCT tranny. However when I entered the autocross track, all that was thrown out the window. Car had enough pep, handling turns going into and out of turns felt like I was perfectly connected with the road, and it felt light. It was definitely my favorite car amongst the group of cars I drove and most impressed!

After our autocross experience, we were taken to the long track where we took turns driving 650i GC, 640i vert, and 760 li. Although the 650i was the quickest car, my vote still remains with the 235M!

If the 235M was that impressive, I can't imagine how well the M2 will perform.

BTW, the M5, M6 vert, and M6 GC had the competition package and the exhaust note was so throaty and deep! Looking forward for my M5 to pass 1200 miles!

Of course you liked the M235i. Lol!

It weighs about 3,500lbs, which is roughly:

~900lbs lighter than the F10 M5
~900lbs lighter than the M6 Gran Coupe
~1100lbs lighter than the M6 Vert

I've tracked my old Z3M at an autocross before, which was around 3,000-3,100lbs and it still felt too heavy for autocross.

I'm going to be tracking my Fiat Abarth later this month at an Autocross event, which comes in at a whopping 2,400lbs with modifications. You really need a car under 3,000lbs to enjoy autocross, otherwise your just fighting weight and shredding tires for no good reason.

If you want a real comparison take all of those cars to VIR or Watkins Glen, or even better, the Nurburgring and then report back. I just wish that everyone who owns a Top Tier M car, M5, M6, M6GC, could at least drive it on a proper mountain road with long sweeping turns and straightaways, and truly feel what it is like to accelerate at full throttle starting at 120mph to 155mph. Your perspective changes on these cars if you ever get a chance to do that. The M5, M6, and M6GC are unbelievably fast cars.

The M2 should be every BMW fanboy boy-racers dream come true. Especially if they drop the weight under 3,500lbs. 375hp will be fun, but the M4 will still be faster, even on an autocross track. Horsepower counts too. The M2 will be seen as BMW M returning to its roots, even though I suggest that the F10 M5 still has the DNA of the original E28 M5.

Hey is300 - you were at Limerock? I was there also. Great fun and big track was a blast. My hot lap with the pro driver, he has it in manual 3rd gear yellow and red lined the entire lap except straight away. Cool day!

I was on Monday. I had to sit out the hot lap with the pro driver because I had a terrible headache.

Very cool day and I hope I get invited back next year!

Why the heck does the M2 need to weigh 3500lbs? BMW has lost the plot.

1M was 3300lbs. M2 should be less. Sub 3000 or doesn't get a second look from me.
