Next Chapter

My life with the M5 is coming to an end and I am obsessing over what's next.

Want to do a medium-full sized SUV and would love to get thoughts/opinions from owner's and fellow shoppers as to what I'm considering and what I may be missing.

This is where I am:

Obvious choice
X5M (think I can order in July) there has been a price increase that goes into effect on 4/1 adding $1900 to cost so maybe they will throw in a package or something? $116,950 (after 4/1) as spec'd

Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Love the vehicle but to get it equipped same as X5M its over $140,500. Plus its slower. Lease rates are crap as is residual. Ugly color options. $1700 to get wheel well flares same color as body, that is plain stupid.

Porsche Cayenne GTS. Priced as spec'd about the same as X5M. But a V6 Turbo? that just sounds off-putting. Ditto on color options.

Range Rover Sport Autobiography. I understand higher luxury than others and less performance. 510HP and a gazillion color options.

Maserati Levante S. Just plain ugly and awkward to look at. V6T made by Ferrari (ish) is best part of the vehicle. $104,000.

Mercedes GLE 63S. Sounds very good, not as fast as X5M but close.

Any and all thoughts are welcome.

Just turned in my 14 M5 and got a 17 X5M. I love it even more than the M5 which had been my favorite of all time. It's a lot of fun and I like the higher driving position.

X6M or GLE63 would be my choices , if you got the cash I'd go for a Range Rover SVR!

ya, I was one of the bunch the went to Munich for the new F10M5 and picked up my '13 which I prematurely got rid of. Had a '14 X5M then '15 M3 then '14 M5.
I got rid of the X5M because the older model had a tiny gas tank and I was filling it up weekly. They have since fixed that and I am eager to get back to a higher ride position.

To me the downside of the SVR is that the interior options are few and not very nice and more than that, I cant stand the SVR on the front and rear and on the seats, it is not very muted, too in your face. And it reminds me of the Dodge's with the SVT or whatever it is.

With your BMW M background then I think you know what to expect. I think you will like it.

I had the same dilemma this time last year when I owned my M6GC. Just felt the need to get into a SUV with awd capabilities since I live in the northeast. I looked at everything on your list and went with the M brand '16 X5M last June. Ordered it to my specs. I loved it at first as it checked all the boxes that I was looking for just like "gb" has mentioned above. Added some IND cosmetic mods to make it unique for me and was considering real mods when, well, it got a bit boring and just wasn't doing it for me regardless of the awd feature. Playing Captain Obvious here -just understand that your list is all about SUVs. As far as the X5M, they can put a M on this vehicle all they want and it's surely a monster truck. But that's really all it is. Ms should be cars only, sorry that's my lame ass feeling about it. Those SUVs on your list will all move real well and handle like a dream for SUVs (reliability is the issue and looks) but don't kid yourself to think it's going to be anything like what your used too. When I picked up my new M5 a month ago, I immediately knew what I was driving and the fun factor has returned (hopefully this will last this time because the car musical chairs is brutal on my dwindling bank account!).

Oh, and other than the speed and relatively sweet handling with the X, I really liked the height. What I really grew to hate was it's heavy, only looks great from a front and rear view (side view is like the panamera f'ugly) and drank gas!! If your planning to beat the shit out of it which all Ms need, understand the gas cost factor. It's not small and much more than any M car.

I can see that. For me, the SUV thing was an itch that needed to be scratched. I'll probably get it out of my system over the three year lease and get the F90 M5 that will come out soon. Fun so far.

For me, I'd be going with the X5M because of the familiarity of the S63TU engine. Have you followed @m6beast or @dmetuning on Instagram? They both picked up X5Ms and have transformed them into freaks. Beautiful rides. Head turner for sure

Mercedes E63s Wagon

AWD, great handler, more storage space than X5m and p car and insanely fast. I had an 06 E55 wagon and now have a 14 E63s wagon. It is a sleeper EXCEPT for real car guys - anyone that actually knows what it is goes completely giddy when they see it. On top of that it is essentially a unicorn - I saw one E55 wagon other than mine in 10 years and have never seen another E63s wagon. I'd take a hard look at it - unless you live near me - in that case - nevermind.

Agreed! I'm not really trashing the X5M beast. People just need to understand going from a car to an SUV is really a different animal no matter how crazy fast they can be. Really liked mine but in the end, economics wise, paying these numbers for a SUV as opposed to a freaky fast sedan..... well that's a decision for each of us depending on our situations. Cheers

SVR is pretty hideous inside, and i think the X5M is the bette car.

how's about a Srt (no flames pls) grab one cheep like a 14-15 w low mileage hold ya over till the new f90 comes out and keep the srt as a daily..

thats what i have traded my x5m for the srt right after i got my f10 m5 1st american car ive ever owned and i gotta say i absolutely love her..

Sexxy ass curb appeal , handling , braking , clean updated plush interiors , somewhat exclusive hardly see em on the road..

Now i'll be the 1st to admit it no X5m but when comparing the price its giving you a hell of alot for the $$$

sure i'd loove to have an x5m in garage next to my m5 but those 2 monthly payments are absurd , with this combo i get best of both worlds 1000+ hp garage amazing v8 beastly daily and my m5 for fun and super speed.

the way the pricing is w the 14-15's rt now i'd seriously consider one to hold ya over for the new m5 , it won't break the bank and chances are when the new m5 comes out you'll be able to keep both

my 0.02 cents

Garage List
I had a F10 M5 comp which was a bucket list car for me. Loved it but moved to a house on a hill that requires AWD in the winter. Got a X5M and love it. It has speed, utility and luxury at a relatively reasonable price point compared to the others on your list. Works for me as the DD as I have a dedicated sports car for that need.

I have a 16 M5 and recently picked up a 17 X5M to daily drive. The truck is incredible and couldn't be happier with my purchase. It's fast, good looking, and handles BETTER than my M5. It's the best bang for your buck hands down. I haven't driven the Porsche truck but I can't imagine it being any better than the X5M in terms of performance. Not to mention the X5M costing less and having BMW warranty, I don't think service is free on the Porsche but I could be wrong.

X5M or GLS. I have a GL450. Basically the same vehicle. Love it. Go to the BMW if you don't need the size. GLS if you do. The AMG 63 is obviously a beast. But if you don't need the extra speed, go with the 450. Its a 550 motor with a calmer program. You can program it to get close to a 63 and save $$$. For $1200 you get 500 hp, 580tq. Not bad considering the gls63 is 577hp and 561tq and a GLS 450 is $57k less.

I just got out of a 14 M5. Had it for three years. I think what people are saying including me about the handling of the X5M is that it gives better feedback at the limit so it gives more confidence. I doubt anyone thinks it would go faster around a track than an M5. It sure as hell will not.

That's probably a better way of wording it. In my opinion it's a lot easier to break traction and get the back end out in the M5 around a turn than it is in the X5M.
