M5 as a Daily??

Hey all...

I live in the Northeast and I have always believed I needed an AWD to ensure I (and my wife if she ever uses my vehicle) feels safe and secure and that the car is capable of handing inclement weather (within reason of course).

I've got a 550 on order.... But man... I'd really like to just get the M5... But it will be my daily driver. So.....

Who is using their M5 for daily driver (DD) duties?

What kind of MPG are you seeing? What can of range can you get from a tank? (Not concerned with MPG... But I am wondering how far I can travel without needing to refuel.)

Where do you live/drive?

Do you regret getting it for a DD?

Any other thoughts, experiences, comments, questions, etc... Please share.

Thanks.

Interesting topic. I use my M5 as a daily driver in Atlanta, and it works for me no problem. Gas milage is around 15mpg I only drive in M mode don't like the conservative versions not too lively. I also live in NY where I only drive an SUV ........cars here take a beating with the roads/nasty weather. I would never drive any sports cars here with these conditions even with AWD.

Sports cars in my opinion are fun with dry conditions, and a sunny day. I guess that's the LA native in me because it's a car show case because of the weather. So the M5 in my opinion is a DD depending on where you live. good luck.

I DD mine - also in the Northeast. Averaging around 14 because of my heavy foot and my stop/go commute. Range is actually much better than that figure indicates as "range" implies highway driving. I suspect 350+ is doable without too much trouble on the highway.

I don't run a winter setup - summers all year. If you get a proper winter tire setup, you're good to go. When there's snow on the streets, I just work from home.

No regrets whatsoever - I love it.

From the North East as well...My M5 is my DD - however I also have a Grand Cherokee for snow days. This year it paid off. Last year, however, I never needed to use the Grand Cherokee.

I drive to/from work (less than a mile each way)6 days a week and generally spend an additional 90 minutes or so driving for fun every morning. I'm averaging about 13.1 MPG but I'm always on sport plus modes (aside from suspension).

I'm happy with my M5 as a DD - but by all means get the 550. Only makes the rest of us look that much better!

About 7 city 25+ highway. Range is really good because it's a huge tank

> Where do you live/drive?
California so no ice/snow issues here

> Do you regret getting it for a DD?
Nope but I'm going to get a 528 or something else to DD as soon as the lease is up on one of my other cars.

Well I had 550i 2012 F10 Dinan Stage 2 and just sold it and was a beautiful car for the purpose it was made for, really fast!!
The guy who bought from me from Atlanta who was a very nice BMW real enthusiast and appreciated the mods I did to the caand I loved giving her to him as I felt he will take care if her -

Anyway,
Didn't mean to be off topic ,
But actually I replaced it with F10 M5 -
So It is very relevant to your question,
My average MPG with real hard driving 17.3 but I have commutes to work sometimes of 20 miles so that improves total mileage ...

BTW before I sold my 550i I drove it with sports mode on and drove it like my M5 and guess what same mileage if not worse!!

M5 = Fun daily driver but doubt in NY though and I don't live there but drove there more than a few days before and your gas mileage will be around 13-14 mpg, I would get X6m or X5m in New York will be almost as fast with AWD!! and very fun to drive too, BTW I can speak to X5 because I had the X5 50i and probably was more fun to drive than 550i except for high speed and the Active Steering which was horrible and without it (Had X5 before it without active steering) and was horrible too, damned of you do and damned if you don't get active steering with X5 as without it too heavy and with it too artificial but otherwise a beautiful car overall.

My 2 cents sir

I daily my straightpiped M5. Gas can go by very quick depending on how you drive. But usually im in gas saving mode, when Im City driving with a lot of cars I just go sport plus , sport plus, comfort and throttle response all the way down.Basically feels like a 7 but You can still feel a lot of the horses and its a very tamed for cruising. When Im out late or Im coming home from class IM in full maniac mode.

I Daily drive my m5 as well it is a decent car to have as a daily. I would like to not have it as a daily because it is to nice of a car to have it as daily but I went to an m5 from a LIMEROCK PARK EDITION M3 so this is way better as a daily than an m3.

But I average 30mph and I am getting 16.2 mpg and I only have 2500 miles so that will improve the mpg as I WILL drive more. but it is a great car for a daily not better than a 550 as daily but of course the m5 is supper car compared to a 550i but it is up to you. I would get the m5 personally. your wife can drive it on comfort and it will be safe trust me. I let my sister drive it.

Absolutely! It's too big, comfortable, and luxurious to be a weekend car; That's what a 911 or M3 is for!

I'm from NYC I have my m5 as a DD. In the winter just make sure you have winter setup going and for as mpg I don't even worry about it, your driving a m5 not a Prius.

Mine is for DD in OC and LA area. 16mpg...range would be around 350 miles but I always refill her at 260ish. 50% of driving on efficient, comfort, comfort and 30% on M1 set up as sports plus, sport, sport and remaining 20% on risky M2 set up as sport plus, sport, sport with MDM when I want to have some fun...great car except minor complains like break noise. Btw, I will bring my car to the dealer on the next Monday for break squeal noise for third time.

So I think this winter has been very unusual, we got wintery weather every other week. But this weather has been making me ask myself this very question every day since I bought my M5 in November.

I LOVE the car, having owned every M3 so far and this being my first M5 I think the F10 M5 is a great car. However, I traded my X5M in for this car...and I've been wishing every day that I hadn't.

Right now I'm debating on whether to trade it back in for an X5 5.0 M Sport. My dealer ordered me one in almost the same color combo as my M5...

I'm not sure winters on this car would work. Until the last few years cars haven't had this kind of torque. Also there isn't exactly a snow setting to dial back the power. My rear end kicks out on cold days..

So I ended up just getting a set of Blizzaks for my M3 and using that for this winter....I may get the X5, Cayenne or maybe wait for the Macan.

Just in case we get another winter like this, I need a little ground clearance and AWD with winters to get around.

i say all this but i probably will keep it, i can't bear parting with it.

I must be old. Mine is not a daily. I drive a 3/4 ton Denali HD much of the time, and the M when the weather is nice. During spring, summer and fall I could drive it every bit of three-four days a week. As for 911s or M3s being better weekend candidates, again, I guess I'm old; I want a decent back seat AND don't fancy the chain or pooka shell necklace around my neck... Flame baby, flame!!!!

I ask about the MPG only in regards to what kind of range I can get out of a tank... I travel the state of PA for my job. I once owned a Jeep SRT8 with an 11mpg and 17gal fuel tank... I couldn't pass a gas station without having to fuel up. Even though my E70 X5 is only the 300hp 35i, it's REAL nice getting 430 miles out of a tank.

^^This

When I said I was trading in my M5 for the 650 xDrive, people in DC and other places were like don't do it b/c the winters aren't that bad up here. Winter sucks everywhere except SoCal, AZ, SoFL and parts of TX. The M5 was my daily driver and I loved it; but make no mistake, winter is anything below 40 degrees with the stock Michelins. Everyone doesn't have $4k for a winter setup, wants the hassle of removing tires/wheels every 6 months, has the space or money for an additional car or has the ability to work from home on snowy days. The DC area loves to shut down for snow, but places like NY don't shutdown for snow. Do I miss my M5? Yes, on some days. However, this winter confirms I made the right decision...at least for me. Good luck and do what you think is best for you and your family.

Just got though my first year. Works good as a DD in NJ I did 18,000 miles get 325-350 miles as a commuter 300 if have some sporty runs if your crazy then 225 miles. Bad winter this year. I would change only that I would have got 19 inch winters potholes are always a nuisance and especially this year. and I got blizzaks that I regret. Great for snow on the ground but you loose grip confidence in high speed corners in cold dry roads. In my m3 with winter pirellis I did not have this. I also have a manual which in the m3 was a pain for my 3 mile commute now I have 80 mile round trip it's not an issue because of the insane tourque.

It's only an issue when snow is higher than the front air dam.

Go for it. Remember it only snows 10 days a year for the other 345 there no better all round beast.

For me a 75 mile round trip to work w/out awd would be a pain in the NY metropolitan area during the winter. Couldn't even make it up the hill to my present house certain days w/out awd. It's just way to easy to get stuck w/out it. I got through several winters w a 1991 3 series w snow tires on all four wheels just fine, but I always contemplated buying chains.

I'd love an M5 but I have a 550xi waiting to be picked up next week. I'm waiting for the M5 awd.

Which is my mix 17.3 average
But my highway is 22-23 mpg
I am yet to see 25 mpg some people witnessed !!
Aggressive crazy like crazy all the time you just can't get below 13 average -
Which is actually not bad because I had an Acura TL and drive this car really hard with 6 cylinders and you still dip low into the 15 mpg!! So actually not bad...

But heard RS7 boasts 28 mph highway !! AWD !! WOW !! 4.0 I guess is helping !! And city almkst 20 mpg wow! Good job Audi -

I hope I don't get stoned here for praising Audi now in here but guys I have an M5 -
Have mercy -

LOL
