For a driver who enjoys performance, this M5 is probably the BEST daily driver - if you don't drive in snow/ice or very cold roads. If I lived in the Northeast there would be many days that this car stays in the garage. The assist systems will protect you from a lot of mistakes on bad roads, but awd has it's place and time.

As far as mpg goes, I am impressed by my realized gas mileage given the type of driving the M5 was designed for. But... I would say most M5 drivers worry about mpg as much as someone driving a Ferrarri.. they don't. You'll have a hard time rationalizing this purchase based on mileage, and you shouldn't drive it on frozen winter roads. So I guess my advice is to forego the M5 if these factors are important to you.

I drove mine a good amount during this winter on the frozen roads of colorado. With pirelli sotozeros I had no trouble in the snow and ice. You just have to be smart and realize your limits.

I had the car serviced and they gave me a loaner 550, and the m5 is a whole different car. The 550 was very dull.

Ha! I just came from Vail on I-70. You guys have some balls out there. There was easily a couple of inches on the highway, roads weren't treated, I was going downhill in a Grand Cherokee sliding as the car would't stop at 60 miles an hour and an Audi S4 convertible comes blowing by me zigzagging around traffic..downhill mind you..

crazy!!

Had it a few weeks ago and replaced it with M5
Can't say it was dull
It is not an ///M and made for a different customer definitely not an enthusiast ! Which is weird because in the past all BMW were enthusiast's cars!! But today pretty much an ///M thing and actually lately people started questioning whether ///M car are what they used to be ?!!!

But personally love my ///M so far and I only have good things to say about it

I drive mine daily. Here in northwest, we have more rain than snow but with proper winter tires, there hasn't been a single issue. I am seeing average 7.6km/L and probably refuel every 550km or sometimes more if I travel on hwy more often.

M5 has always had a build goal of being a daily driver and at the same time a track worthy car by the touch of a few settings.

The M5 in NY/NJ during the winter with winter tires is a very capable car.

If you want the M5, winter driving shouldn't hold you back.

If you insist on AWD, the Alpina B7 is another option. Different car.. but I personally would get it over the 550.

M5 is the way to go for BMW. As I said before it can hold it's own during the winter months.

It is all personal preference IMHO.

I personally will never buy a non M car & would pay the extra to get an M model any day if you ask me.

If you're asking about MPH comparing both the BMW 550i to an M5 you're def looking into the wrong cars my friend.

I can tell you my M6 Coupe "Competition Package" gets fairly good on gas based on how hard I drive it...

Believe me when I say this and I know everyone on this forum would strongly agree that these cars are impossible to baby around when driving... #realtalk

Agree on that
Had 550i and it seems never drove it hard as it never begs for ot and when you do feedback is little and numb so gradually gas mileage looks better,
Got M5 and of course driving it like it should be -
So MPG average 17.3 which is a lot lower than 550i,
Fortunately had my 550i before selling it privately and had the pleasure of driving it on the day of letting it go and drove it like my M5 in sports more and guess what and I am not lying less MPG than M5!!!!!!! And reason was clear in Sports mode 550i was hung up in very high RPM sometimes unduly!!!! M5 is tuned right !!!! But for the price you pay 550I WITH Dinan on it is a good car still!!!

My M5 is my DD and I LOVE it. But, I now live in California, where it rarely rains and never snows.

I'm from Boston originally and drove my 911 C4 (AWD) and S4 daily through all 4 seasons with winter sport tires. I would not have chosen to get the M5 if I was still in the Northeast. It's so powerful that I sometimes inadvertently spin the tires when the roads are dry, so driving in snow/ice would not be fun for me.

I primarily drive in Sport and get about 16.5mpg with a fairly short (14 mile) stop and go commute. I think I get about 350-370 miles per tank. Not terrible, but not great either.

GUYS!!!! I get it! LOL!!!
I am ONLY asking to understand what kind of RANGE I can get out of a tank when I take long trips for business.

I have to laugh… I stated at least 2 times in my posts in this thread that I am only asking about MPG to help me evaluate and make a decision.

I COMPLETELY understand that a 445hp or a 575hp V8 in a 4400lb car is not going to give me Prius-like MPG.

AGAIN… I ONLY ASK ABOUT THE MPG TO UNDERSTAND HOW FAR A TANK OF GAS CAN TAKE ME.

Thanks for everyone's help.

You can get all the range from 350km to 800km on highway, depending on your drive

Btw, prius out of town has terrible consumption! So technically on highway you are likely to get better mpg than prius
