Potential M5 Theft - BMW Security Improved?
Guys,
Without going into a particular specifics; has BMW improved security on newer cars, say on the LCI, over previous models? - I read on pistonheads that the firmware had been updated to stop a window being lowered to give access to the OBD port (from where info can be hacked to reprogram a blank key). Like this 1M... I ask as a neighbour had their current model X5 attempted to be stolen last night. Lock barrel meticulosly removed; all 4 windows jammed down. Owners key could not start the car nor lift the windows. Pretty odd... Anyway, our LCI M5 was ignored. I'm wondering why. X5 (attempted) stolen to order... Whom knows.... Any thoughts? |

yes there is a known gap in the security of older BMW's (of which there is a fix now). Two issues, one jam a screwdriver in and hold on the key all windows go down - then with some cars X5 and M3 notably - able to plug into OBD without setting sensors off, from there you can code a new key. can take less than twenty minutes. my m3 has the fix.
Software fix: stop key access to lower windows, prevent key coding without key in the ignition or detected by the keyless system.
