UPDATE!!! German tuner LEIB Engineering cracked the F-series DME last week!!!

I have been in touch with German tuner LEIB Engineering ( http://www.leib-engineering.de/ ) after their Facebook update last week about finally being able to tune the BMW F-series cars.

They have confirmed via email to me that they last week cracked the DME (or rather "found a way") and are now able to tune any F-series BMW!!!

The first car they managed to tune was a M235i that was tuned to 400hp just by software modifications.

These are some of the things they can do (on ALL F-series):
  • Delete the engine lights (if the car has been decatted)
  • Open the v-max to unlimited
  • Apply a new (bigger) set of turbos to the software
  • "Program the F-series with every wish, that we or a custumer could have"

EDIT: LEIB Engineering offers a 1 year warranty and also before and after dyno testing!

The tuner is based in Germany, so it might not be available for all the US members on this forum.

EDIT 2:

This is the latest developments regarding DME software modifications from LEIB Engineering:

They are now able to ship already tuned DME’s to customers. At present time this currently only available for all N55 and S55 engines.

M5/M6 will be the next. It will be finished in the end of September.

Completely opened Vmax, deleted CEL and more is possible.

The first tunes are:
  • M135i & M235i: 390 PS and 525 Nm

  • M3 & M4: 550 PS and 650 Nm

  • All other x35i(s): 360 PS and 500 Nm

The customer can keep his own DME. They can now ship the already tuned DME directly to the customer.

All they need is some basic info of the car, in order to flash the correct base software.

They have also lowered the price AFAIK

contacting them now

so they have
Stage 1 - 630hp/780NM torque
Stage 2 - CEL removal, Vmax removal, working on power increase for this stage

they also offer warranty for cars under 5 years old/50k miles

it takes them 1-3 days to do an upgrade

I know that we have other F10 (non M5) owners also looking into getting a tune from them.

I have also read on other forums some claims that "German tuners have been able to tune the F-series for a week now".

LEIB Engineering seems very confident in my correspondence with them and have made me a written offer on tuning for my car, including a 1 year warranty and before and after dyno testing.

One thing that has to be kept in mind is that it takes months to figure out how to translate the codes into tables. No doubt they key is leaked, but i'm not holding my breath for anything for now.

A very good point. But on the other hand, they claim that they managed to do this last week for the first time and was able to get 400hp from a M235i...

I'm not familiar with tuner software and how user friendly that is. Maybe it's fairly easy to change the key parametres in the map if you know what you're doing?

Tuning software such as WinOLS are actually a very easy to use if you know a thing or two about adjusting maps. However this is not the case here, before that part you need to build maps out of the data you have access to. This is the part that %99 tuners don't do themselves, they source their translated base maps from 3rd parties that in BMW tuning scene are less than a dozen of them. These 3rd parties actually do the most part, first they need to come up with a tool to read "raw" files and understand the algorithms and try to find a communication between them. It's a very long process and also very expensive. Then they will come up with maps that tuners are familiar with and can adjust them by WinOLS or other software.

My understanding is that LEIB Engineering did pass the encryption, but their software is very basic and limited. They probably located the speed limiter via DAMOS file, eliminated it, and then uploaded some sort press tune. I'd wait for awhile if i were in the market to acquire a tune from any tuner claiming they have a software.

The encryption on 2 and 3 series is much different from 5 series. Are they 100% sure about F10 m5's?

Yes, they are 100% sure and seem very confident indeed, like Boss has already mentioned.
I might be the "test-pilot" for them for an M5/6 F-series, if i get right offer! We will see tomorrow!

This sounds like good news. However, I'll be waiting a while. First thing that comes to mind is the voiding of the warranty, since this will be a re flash tune and not a little piggyback, which the dealer computers would be able to detect. I'll let someone else be the guinea pig here. I'm also not so sure that my M5 needs any more power at the moment for the location of where I live in the U.S. It's bad enough I can't use the 700+hp I am making now. What am I going to do with 900+hp where they throw you in jail just for doing 20mph over the speed limit. Reference the Jalopnik article that everyone is talking about and you'll see what I mean.

Don't get me wrong brotha. I would love to see an S63tu engine make over 1000hp on stock turbos with nothing but a really good ecu tune, nothing would make me happier on the F10 M5, but I'm just trying to exercise good risk intelligence for myself. I would love to hear about someone destroying 900hp GTR's with an F10 M5. I hope this will be true one day that is until the next generation GTR comes out, which supposedly is going to use a hybrid assist drive train. Yikes!

You'll still only do 199mph because there is another limiter on the DCT set at 199mph. The 30 Year Edition M5 has no limiter on the engine and is still limited to 199mph.
