f10 rod bearing failure

Did European Delivery of my F10 M5 in September, 2013. Drove it 1000 miles in Europe, then was part of the oil pump recall and had to turn the car into the closest dealership (in Avignon). Received the car with the new oil pump in November, 2013.

The car ran perfectly until I developed engine failure while cruising on the freeway with 48,800 miles and after 46 months of ownership. Had two worn rod bearings which caused the engine to seize. Just received the beast back a new engine, with $36,000 of repairs, courtesy of BMW. Love that 4 year 50,000 mile warranty!

Has anyone else had this problem with the F10 M5?

Glad it worked out.
What kind of warranty did BMW give you on the new engine ?

Thats awesome for you that ish broke b4 warranty was up... Curious too though, what sort of warranty does one get on a new engine - or does it stop being covered at 50k/48m?

Damn that was uncomfortably close! Your car is almost the same as mine. Did you pick yours up on Sept 1st too? I've got a 100k extended BMW warranty so I can rest easy for a little while still, but it goes to show us how important an oil analysis after every oil change. I just clicked over 75k miles and just got another oil change and am waiting on my last oil analysis results. Godspeed.

every manufacture will have bearing failures, just depends on what rate/percentage of failures as to if this is a problem we need to pay atension to. I don't think we are looking at E90 M3 problems here and even then I tink they have been blown out of proportion - no pun intended.

Nice first post. How is that 46 months? It's not even 36.

I actually picked up the car on September 20, 2012 not 2013 as I posted. Thus 46 months into my original warranty.

The new engine warranty only goes to 50,000 miles. I will be purchasing a 7 year 100,000 mile warranty before my warranty expires.

Extended warranties are expensive, but getting a new engine paid for by BMW is priceless.

I'm pretty sure any parts installed by the dealer have a two year (unlimited milage?) warranty, even if the original warranty has ended.

Wow, you lucked out. Hopefully this is a one off for the F10. Rod bearings are a known issue in the E9X world.

Just bought a 2014 M5 CP. 24 hours later rod blows through the block. BMW replaced under warranty. No additional additional compensation.

interesting, but not at all surprising. I'll continue to believe every car is essentially, a tossup on if it will blowup prematurely.
