Cold Start - Warm Up

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
How long do you wait to warm up your M5 before you pull off?

I'm in NYC and the weather is just changing, I've been waiting at least 5 minutes to pull off unless I warm it up beforehand.

On cold starts, right after the RPM's drop to about 800.

I go easy on the gas, up until my oil temps are up.

I usually do that when it's above 50 degrees Fahrenheit

Any reason why you would warm up your car for 5 minutes, when it's below 50*?

It's absolutely unnecessary with modern motors. In your head, it may seem like neglect, but it'll drive fine and last a long time so long as you don't go buck wild before oil temps get to where it needs to be.

Oh wow. I just read what I wrote. I meant if it's under 50 degrees.

For instance, today was 41 degrees when started it this morning. I waited 5 minutes and then got going. It still took about a minute to settle at 800 RPM but that was being precautious.

No cold starts here. I just let it warm up for 30 seconds or so and start driving.

No cats here so got the cold start deleted

No wait for me. It says in the manual that it's best to just start driving. I would not pound on it until the car get to temp though.

That's what I read too a couple of minutes ago. Just a bit weird coming from an '12 Acura TL into a brief stint with a '13 550xi into this. Thanks for the help.

The best way to warm up a car is drive slowly and keep the rpm low for the first 10-15 min. Stationary warm up doesn't do anything for the gearbox and etc., plus without stepping on the gas pedal and putting on some pressure, the corrosive residual water in the exhaust pipes doesn't get pushed out.

Above are some of the suggestions that came from my friends in the auto industry.

I think it's better to just drive. I remember an old M5 that actually indicated what RPM was safe to attain prior to reaching temperature.

Yes sir. Everyone is used to me so I never get complaints even when I start up my race quad. As much as I like it, I would like my cold start deleted to respect my neighbors at 515am when I decide to drive that car to wk.
