6MT M5; Thoughts?

Hello All,

I'm in the market for an M5. Having previously owned a 2013 F10 M5 in DCT I know that I definitely want a 6MT this time around. I saw this M5 a few months ago while the price was at around $43K which is pretty high for an M5 with 68K miles on it but they dropped the price down to $39K and I'm sure I could negotiate more. The car is pretty much fully loaded and I was wondering your thoughts were on buying an M5 with such high mileage. Its one of a handful 6MT M5 available in the market spec'd this well at this kind of price.

New here but one of the most significant things about the manual is that when shifting the car goes out of boost then has to spool up again. I'm a tried and true manual guy but the DCT is a pretty amazing transmission. I've got mine due here next week - '13 DCT.

So like I said had a DCT M5 for about a year and a half and loved every second of it. After test driving a 6MT M5 I really really enjoyed it. Yea its slower than the DCT and DEFINITELY not as good but I have my heart set on a stick M5 this time... My question was more relating to the 68K miles the car has. It was CPO'd by BMW and carries CPO until 2020

the E39 M5 was the true manual driver's car..unfortunately even with a supercharger it can't keep up with the newer cars' HP levels

Go for it! I LOVE my 6MT! I don't care if I'm slower than everyone else, I'm having more fun driving!

miles do not matter I would be more concerned with maintenance history and the condition of the car. GL!!!!

I wanted the manual until I drove it....car felt disconnected and unbalanced...coming from several other manual cars.......DCT is the best option which explains where there are no more manuals being built

Carfax doesn't list any maintenance or oil changes for about 50k miles, so check the records to see if the owner actually got it done during that time or walk away. Personally I went for DCT since that was the shape of super car shifting at the time, and I've wanted to try that as an alternative to manual for a long time.

I've noticed used F10 M5 manuals sit around a lot longer than the DCTs, so my guess is that they will fetch a bit lower price when you sell it.

Call a BMW dealership and ask for service records; Carfax is full of holes. Case in point my car; Carfax is clean but spotty oil change intervals. After I called the selling dealer, the SA actually emailed me all of the records with the prior owner's details redacted. I was able to verify 1200 mile break in done at 1185, and oil changes every 10k thereafter until 54k miles which is when I bought it (mine is due in on Tuesday, and I'm beyond excited as you can imagine). Also cooling line TSB was done and high pressure injectors were done as well.

At the very least, the SA can verbally run through all of the service visits and fill in said holes. Some get skittish about giving away any info, but tell them you just want records as part of your pre purchase inspection. It gave me much more piece of mind.

So I noticed a few holes in the CarFax maintenance record as well but one good note sticks out very strongly. BMW CPO'd the car which must mean it had the service record to support BMWNA deciding to CPO it... right?

Hmm,...I beg to differ that the 6MT in the F10 M5 doesn't suit the car well! If anything,...the 6MT in the F10 M5 may not suit "the driver" of an F10 M5 too well!

I don't know what the DCT is like in the F10,...and I'm not sure if it compares well to the SMG of my e60 M5. But, I've come to like the flexibility of the SMG tranny. There are times when changing gears is as smooth as it gets,...perfect shifts each and every time! The only thing I miss about a regular MT would be the ability to press the "clutch" and "blip" the throttle! Of which,...if I had an e60 M5 with a MT,...I'd be one throttle blipp'n fool.

I believe M5/M6 are so big and heavy and maybe Manual Gearbox is not a right fit especially comparing with amazing DCT that is fast and reliable BUT after 3 years driving my M6 DCT now I am enjoying my M4 MT...
So my vote for Manual Gearbox

Went to see the car the other day. Solid overall condition really not much to comment on. Drove amazing! I feel like driving the F10 in stick adds this different feeling of control that completely changes the driving dynamic of the car. Slower it is but the excitement of launching in first and then pushing the clutch and switching gears can never be replaced for me with pulling a paddle.

I all but bought the car. I had this gut feeling that something was up as while I was signing the dealer says to me "So when do you want to pick it up?" to which I replied "what do you mean? Im taking it now" To which they replied "No can do, there are a few maintenance needs that we need to order parts from BMW." Now i could take this as them being proactive but something really didn't sit right with me. I didn't feel or see anything obviously wrong with the car. It was just the way they were being very adamant about the car not being ready for at-least 2 days pretty much scared me off.

The hunt continues!

Why didnt u just just ask them what it needs? Pretty normal for a car to need a few days to prep

Agreed, there is no need to walk away because the car needed a few things. Simply ask them what it needs and then determine if those are red flags. New brake pads or tires are not red flags.

I did and thats what worried me. They were dancing around the answer. The sales manager and the rep didn't have the same story.
