Local Dealer trying to play games?

So, car was in my local dealer town for some unrelated warranty work and they carried out the usual health check....

I should also note that the car was in 3 weeks ago for an MOT (not sure what this is called in the US but this is the test that all cars need to pass to be road legal) and all that was required was some new tyres...

So....They have now come back and said that my front disks need replacement and my rear pads need replacement...I know that there is a lip on the front disc and will probablly need replacing within the next 5,000 miles which for me is over 1 year away...

So I went to my service advisor and basically stated that I havent really driven my car in the last 4 weeks so why am I being told that I needed pads and discs now...The dealer trying to carry out unnecessary repair work is what I thought to myself?

The service manager then came back and said that they didnt need to be changed now and they were just advisories however Im looking at the paperwork now which clearly says that the front disc and rear pad needs to be changed hence my other thread on where can I source original BMW parts for reasonable money...

Very strange and now I dont know whether they need to be changed or not but if I can source some cheap parts ill prob buy them now anyway for whenever they actually need to be changed

Anyone had any similar experiences with a dealer trying to get you to carry out work on your car that may not actually me needed??

Forget the lip, what is the actual disc thickness- below the minium stamped on the discs and are the pad measurements? With out this its conjector on everyones (including the dealer) behalf.

MOT won't look at this, they test the brakes on the brake dyno to check performance is over a certain mark and they are balances left to right BUT the health check should have picked up any REAL visble defect here.

Well, they have told me that it is 2mm below the minimum thickness...

This may be true but I just dont understand how it was fine 3 weeks ago and now suddenly its under the minimum level and requires a replacement...Basically im not sure I trust the measurement as I have not driven more than 200 miles in the last 3 weeks

Same goes for the rear pads although they didnt actually tell me the thickness, just told me it needs replacement

Which dealership?

I have had this in the past and asked them to retain the replaced parts - failing that & ideally (if you have the time) inspect the discs yourself at the dealer.

Its spire in Kentish town who I think have a bit of a rep for doing this kind of thing....

There is definately quite a lip on the front disc but I cant challenge the measurement as I can only go by what they told me unless I figure out how to measure it myself...

Im just suspicious because 3 weeks ago everything was ok.....Then they needed changing......"oh wait you dont need to change it straight away its just an advisory"....

How can it be an advisory if they are telling me my disc thickness is below the minimum level?? Surely if this is the case then the discs need to be changed full stop??

This!

if you carry out the work from them request the parts in question to be ready for you to inspect after.. So you can see for yourself

OR

take it to another dealer/specialist independent garage to verify before any work is carried out

dont listen to them
go and check it out yourself
i have been having a lip on my fron discs for a while, for past 15k miles my service computer says that front brakes need to be changed within 1200miles, but it never went below that figure, even though i have done 15k+ miles in last 12 months

i have just been hitting speeds that stock car cannot even get to due a limiter and my brakes work like champs

i am going to change both pads and discs, once i finish my pads, but as long as breaks work, what is the point of changing it? you can clearly see your pads thickness, so if you are happy with it, dont change them yet, but have parts ready to be changed

i have been storing new discs for over 15 months now
