ESS Tune or any type of tune for m5 f10

Debating whether to tune my stock f10 m5. Only mod is is axle back so far. So from what I've heard, a tune will add 80-100 hp, and 80-100 torque. It all sounds like fun... but I don't wanna hear the benefits of a tune.. I want to know the downsides if anyone can help

How is mpg affected?

I've heard a tune makes the turbos work harder (obviously) which can make them burn out quicker... true?

Any types of engine malfunctions? I had a tune on my 335is and it would malfunction from time to time... al though apparently the tune I had was too strong for the car.

If anyone can give me insight that would be great

You can get the Jb stage 1 or JB4, it is the most popular option and will not affect your MPG unless you are driving more aggressively

It will not give you any problems as long as your car is in good shape. If your car has bad components (bad spark plugs, ignition coils,etc..) more boost will expose it. This is the case no matter which tune you go with

Get a flash. It will drive like stock when you want it to and no change in MPG - and you have the option to drive hard and that will obviously affect MPG. You get 80-100hp with all relevant maps (timing, fuel, vanos, etc etc) as designed by BMW... and it's proven to be practically bulletproof at 22.7psi.

would never go jb4. had it on my 335i and always had problems, never again. just go for a good flash tune. i think i will go for halim cazimi but there are lots of other good tuners who really make the tune themselves.

If you go with a reputable tuner you shouldn't experience any downsides.

Is your warranty voided?

The answer is, if the issue is related to the tune, then yes it is. If it is not, it will be covered.

Example, if you have bouncing / erratic RPMs, BMW can point to the tune and claim the issue is tune related. The fix, they flash back to stock (easy to do) and see if the issue goes away, if it does, it's tune related, you pay for the flash. If it's not, they continue to diagnose and cover under warranty in most cases.

Through standard troubleshooting at BMW dealers, it's highly unlucky on an otherwise stock car they will suspect you have a flash tune and through standard diagnostics they will not know. The risks here is if they do not know and they deem it necessary to upgrade the ECU, you will loose the tune.

I suggest making friends with an SA/Tech that knows the history of he car and will work with you. As you can see in my signature, I was modified and never had a warranty claim issue.

I do highly recommend a tune. Stage 1 is a ton of fun. Wish the cars came from factory this way. Easily could seee 620-650whp

I had a JB1 on my MK7 GOLF and now JB4 at 19 psi on my M5 with no issues. The nice things about the JB4 is that you can turn it off when the extra horsepower isn't needed. Once my warranty is up in three years and I upgrade my clutches, I may tune my car. The important thing with the JB4 is to keep an eye on your logs, run the best fuel as possible, and change spark plugs every 15k or so. I was leery about using the JB at 1st, but it worked so well for 20k miles on my GTI, so I went with their product again for my M5 with no issues.

Real talk fellas - 600 HP to the wheels sort of scares me lol even the 520 to the wheels it has now is plenty enough. But we always want more when we don't need it ... haha

Tunes are good, so is the JB4 platform- issues come from plugs and coils or other underlying problems which would surface with a tune as well.

I have zero issues with JB4/BCM/Meth running 22psi over 14,000 miles, just very happy with the performance and feature plus not having to post and drill the ecu is a BIG bonus especially as I would have to ship my ecu's over seas. I would do a tune AND still run the JB4 if I had a local tuner to minimise down time and if there was a fash tune that didn't require opening the ecu.

I have a warranty for the brakes up to 100k miles... Will a flash void that ?

no.

here's the thing, find someone on the forums who has a good SA in your area. Call him/her, discuss your mods etc.

ALWAYS take care of your SA, and tech. You need to understand, you're playing an expensive game, if the motor blows, expect bmw to tell you to screw off. If you have an oil leak, ac goes out, i expect it to be fixed. Some dealers can give you hard time about the latter, if they know car is modded. This is where taking care of your SA pays off. Hope that made sense

Know your limits.

Trevor is correct- a good relationship with your dealer will pay off. Mods have to have a direct relationship with fault... but the dealer could argue that the mods have put more load on the brakes the same as if you track the car so may have an out that will stick this is where the positive relationship with your dealer pays off... if your a demanding, impolite arse you are on your own.

DME Tuning FTW

Ive had my DME's flashed by Mo at DME tuning. Couldn't ask for a better tune and drivability. Also power gains are amazing. If you'd like any info feel free to contact me and i can walk you through it and your options. I made 660whp and 732wtq on his BEF. stock turbos and stock clutch using a JB4 system.
